Default Left Rear Tail Light Too Bright

So I discovered that my left rear tail light is much brighter than the one on the other side. Wife was following me the other night, and she took pictures. I pulled the bulb, it was the correct one. For grins, I swapped it with the one on the other side, and still brighter on the driver's side, but the swapped bulb on the right side was normal brightness. Frustrated, bought new bulbs and put them in, same result. Looked at the housing to see if there was some kind of ballast or similar electrical component in it that was failing and that would provide a clue - nothing, just the wires, and everything was in order. I also scoured the owner's manual to make sure it wasn't some German thing, which I have found plenty of those quirky things on my 928s over the years.

Finally, did a search and found a post on Pelican that said the left side is brighter when the fog light switch is on. I had it on at all times (I automatically put the fogs on when I turn on the headlights). Haven't been able to validate this, but hoping someone else can chime in and let me know if this is indeed the case.

Sounds like you have you headlight switch pulled out which turns on the European rear fog light.

Now that that issue is solved, let's get to the root of the problem. Why would you automatically turn on your fog lights every time you turn on your headlights?

Unless you live in San Francisco or London, I'd say you probably ought to stop doing that.

Sounds like you're turning on the rear fog light. Are you pulling on the high lamp dial and/or seeing the orange indicator light on?

Having one tail light brighter than the other helps others differentiate between running lights and brake lights. Should be standard and law here in the USA.

I was going to suggest a light coat of grey spray paint over the brighter tail light lens - should do the trick
OR
Use a power planer on the dimmer tail light lens and thin it out.
Either way problem solved

Most definitely the light switch is pulled out. Now here is the real question that maybe some of the Europeans can answer. What is it really used for and why just one side? I can’t see how it really could help that much in fog.

Bright light to be more visible through the fog. One side to help distinguish between brake lights.

When using the proper lane assignment, the rear fog light shows the drivers behind you the proper side to pass on.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. I have always wondered.

i use mine regularly, and it really helps. We get dense fog up in the mountains fairly often. With the fog light on only one side of the vehicle, it won’t be mistaken for brake lights.

One click out on the headlight switch turns on the front fog lights in the bumper and the green indicator on the switch, the second click out turns on the rear fog light (driver's side only) and the orange or amber indicator on the switch. You'll also notice that the green icon shows the light rays in the same direction as those of the headlight indicator icon, and the amber icon for the rear fog light points in the other direction denoting which lights point forward and which are at the back.
