Default Extended warranty on a 2011 997.2 - is it worth it?

Guys my warranty is up and I've been offered another 2 years on my 2011 997.2 S PDK. What's other people's experience of the Porsche extended warranty and is it worth the money or should I keep it in my pocket and "self insure"?

The car seems pretty mechanically solid.

Its my daily drive, she'd only do 15-20km in a day. Maybe a track day once or twice a year.

Thanks all

Well, firstly what's the cost?
Secondly, most guys with PDK here would tell you to definitely get the warranty since PDK is replace only not repair and a whopper of a bill (think $16-20k USD last I remember).

I think you can get a PDK under $10k nowadays.

I vote yes, only because non warranty repairs can add up, mostly on labor, which can be spendy on these cars, 2-3 trips to the mechanic could balance out what you pay or more. For a few of the items I have had looked at have been about 700-900 each.

If your not mechanical it makes sense to me at least, others may have different opinions.

What's your risk tolerance

Can you do some work DIY

Do you have a local Indy

Do you use the car for Track, AutoX or street racing

What's the cost of something you would claim. 1k, 5, 10, 20k+

Lots of factors that only you can answer. I would think about the above and other factors and determine your value of a extended warranty. Weigh that against the actual cost and make a decision.

If you decide you need extended, typically 3rd party is more comprehensive and cost effective than through Porsche.

It depends. What type of warranty and how much? Is this a Porsche CPO warranty? These cars are pretty bullet proof, until they're not. PDK can be a big repair, but statistically not a common failure. It really depends on your tolerance for risk, you could buy a $5k warranty that covers more, or never use it.

I'm one of those PDK guys and that's exactly what I would say. Had a PDK failure on my -09 C4S and that tab came to $14,000. Not sure how much they are now but they have come down in price. Still a big ticket item that can't be repaired (save for a few small items) so it's outright replacement with most failures.

Thanks for the thoughts guy's. I think I'll go with it then. Is a Porsche extended warranty, $3k AUD so not much in comparison to a PDK replacement and I drive the can in manual mode all the time which I would assume generates more wear on the gear box than full auto since I'm constantly between 1st and 3rd.

You didn't mention you were in Australia ---- as long as you don't valet you should be alright.

HAHA... Yeah, that Australian Valet driver just finished watching "Ferris Bueller's day off" except he landed the jump under a big orange car
The rear decklid is up... so he must have been going at least 75mph

I have the same dilemma, pay for an assurance you may not need or take the risk? I have an appointment at my PC on the 12th for a "111 point" check, which is mandatory (in Europe anyway) if you want to extent your warranty. That seemed like a good plan anyway because it is under warranty until August so anything they find now can be fixed. But, looking at the above posts and the fact that I also have PDK, I think I will take the extension (two years, but cheaper than 1 year extension). I only wonder how they look at any mods you would want to make. For instance I am thinking of Bilstein Damptronic Coilovers and lowering it a bit. Can imagine they will not allow that?

2009 C2s 125K miles

These 9A1 engines a pretty well built now... even the pumps and coil packs are better than in the past (at least it sure appears that way). If it were me, I would not get an extended warranty.... however, you do have PDK and there is a bit of a dice roll there given the large cost of replacement. Of course, no one knows the odds of that one except for Porsche in Germany.... dealerships are clueless by the way.

Peace

2011 C2 PDK 20k miles, NO extended warranty. I have all recommended maintenance on time. Besides a few long trips with my PCA, I don't drive the car much. Factory warranty ended Aug/2014.

They do the same check here as well and last week pulled me up on having non Porsche approved brake pads and tyres. To qualify for the extension I need to change back to N rated tyres and put Porsche supplied brake pads back on the car. So unless your modes are supplied by Porsche then I'd say they would void the warranty.
