Default 997 Chipped Gear

Hey Guys,

Totally new to this forum thing but I wanted to get some outside opinions on an issue I'm having with my 997 as I can't find anything else online about my situation. I've been driving a 2006 997 for about 5 years now and it currently has 92,000 miles on it. I've had all my service done by a certified Porsche mechanic that is well known in my area. I don't know a whole lot about the mechanics of cars but my last repair ~89,000 miles was a clutch replacement.

Since the clutch replacement about 7 months ago, the car has been fine but about a month ago I got in the car one morning and the 1st gear was making a clicking sound (ONLY 1st gear). My Porsche guy took a look at it and said the first gear is chipped and that the noise I am hearing is the chipped piece. He recommends not using 1st gear much at all and starting the car in 2nd gear when possible. I'm worried this isn't good for the car and I would like your opinions on what I should do; I don't want to burn up my new clutch or put unnecessary wear on anything else. I've never heard of this happening before and I'm curious if anyone else has. My mechanic says the transmission needs to be replaced so I'm looking at a $3,000-$4,000 transmission plus labor on top of that. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Not really hurting the car to start in 2d, but I'd be concerned about where that chip will travel . . . .

I'm not sure if your situation is similar if it's the pressure plate that is chipped but when is the clicking sound occurring? Is it when you press the pedal or when you put the shifter into 1st?

A very small pit or scratch or chip can make a lot of noise. I'd just drive it or fix it, nothing in between.

It's when I press the pedal. 1st gear only.

So he already has taken apart your gearbox? Or is that just a WAG he's making?

Since you're already in for that labor, I would say get a new mainshaft and let him finish the job. That will get you fresh dog teeth on 2nd gear at the same time and you shouldn't ever need to worry about your gearbox again. In the business we consider a "good used" gearbox a core in need of building regardless of miles or claimed history. Trust nothing you can't see directly. You are better of getting your own fixed properly than picking up someone else's problem child.
