I had the pleasure of driving with a new 991.2 C2S the other weekend. Beautiful car, amazing technology, but it just doesn't do it for me. The 997 is the purest, cleanest of all modern 911 designs.
As for the 993, im no hater but I certainly don't think its all that. The rear-end is gorgeous but the headlights arent great. If the 996's are friend eggs, the 993's were hit with the frying pan :-)
My list of favorite designs below:
1. 997.2 (I like the slightly more aggressive front bumper and rear lights on the .2)

Chello . . . The 993 is perhaps the best looking of all modern 911s. Some may argue the long noses, but I think the 94 3.6 Turbo and the 993tt is the best looking 911s ever.
993TT is tolerable, but that's really just make-up on a pig. Regular 993, the front is awful. The rear is at least unoffensive, but in no way nice.
I agree, G-body with a whale tail is just about the greatest thing to have 4 wheels.
I drove a 991.1 TT that a doctor friend of mine is leasing. It had almost every option, from carbon interior bits to the GT Silver exterior paint. I was amazed at the power and yes, the PDK is literally awesome for this car. I currently have a 2006 997.1 6MT C4S (with adaptive sport seats, full leather interior, etc.) that I've made some aesthetic modifications (Aero front bumper, 997 TT rear deck conversion) and it originally came with some TechArt goodies when I bought it (including 20" TechArt wheels). I've joked with the doctor about handing over the lease to his 991 TT right before it's up, and I take over the residual. He seems to be toying with the idea as he has a 2005 997.1 base and doesn't think he'll want to deal with local Porsche dealership maintenance once the lease is up. I already have a buyer for my 997.1 (if I decide to sell), so the question is, would anyone do this?

Totally. If I had the cash for a 991 TT, I'd be all over that.
Just saw a 50th anniversary 991 in that vanilla latte color or whatever that is. Still not sure whether it was real or an homage as I didn't want the cops called on while I drooling on it in some random parking lot.
Gonna go see if it's still there this week. I'd take that one over my car.

Nope. If you want a turbo, go to a 997TT. Everything you love about your car, but with freight train power.
Seriously - as a 997 owner - would you trade straight across for an exact apples to apples 991 ? (same miles, colors, options, history, etc)
Or did they take too much Porsche out of the Porsche ?
Will 997s be the last 'drivers' 911 ?
Will 991 resale erode below 997 ?
After reading everyone's input to date I'll answer my own questions.
I wouldn't make the trade and with no skin in the game, wouldn't make the buy. Mainly appearance and the reason listed below - not the car I wanted as a kid.
They did take too much Porsche out. Even with being a better performer, the 991 seems like a GT, a rear engine 928 or a 2-door Panamera. It's not the 911 that we all dreamed about as kids. This is also the reason I think 911 demand remains strong across the generations. It's a car we all longed for as kids. No one longed for a Nissan GT-R in 1978.
997s will NOT be the last drivers 911. Porsche will soon figure out what many of us already know. We want a lightweight, m/t, drivers car - a modern RS America with lots of HP and a minimum amount of options to maintain and break later. Delete sunroof will be standard on this car.
991s resale will erode below 997.2s. It's already starting to happen.

I just went from a 2007 C2S to a 2017 C2S. I do miss the looks of the 997 from the windshield back. I also fit a little better height wise in the 997, I'm not tall (5'7'') and I could see over the top of the hood better. It seemed easier to back out of the garage in the 997. I wish I had more seat time in say a 997.2 GTS to compare my 991.2 against.
I have driven thousands of miles in a 991.1 C2S, C4S Cab, and C2 Cab. I wouldn't own one, I grow very bored very quickly driving them. The 991.2 gave me a similar feel to my 997.1, it just is more alive, the steering, road feedback, and PDK are amazing. Throw in the complete joy driving back roads, with incredible turn ins, even at speed limit, and I was sold. If I had a 997.2 GTS, who knows maybe I wouldn't have traded up.

I have been thinking about doing this for the last few months.I saw a beautiful PTS tts convertible but did not move fast enough. I am not sure if the cost/benefit ratio makes any sense but a 991 turbo is a beautiful car.
