Ticking noise on 997 GTS
Hey Guys,
I noticed a ticking noise a couple of weeks ago after a canyon run (3-4 hour drive) since then I drove the car a couple of times maybe on 30-60 minutes drives and didn’t notice the noise. My car was due for an oil change and decided to take the car to Auto Strausse in Costa Mesa Ca and have Robert try to diagnose the noise. I played the video for him and he thought that it could be the valves. Well after the oil change I told him I would come back if I heard the noise come back which it did but not as bad, by the time I drove back the noise was gone. I just got back from a short drive and heard the noise come back but once again not as bad as video. Any insights on this??

I'm no expert but I think it has something to do with longer / harder drives increasing oil temperature, which makes it thinner. The valve train then has thinner oil coating it resulting in audible ticking. I think it's less prevalent with some oils (Motul X-Cess) than others (M1).
But I could be completely wrong.
Edit: after watching the video, I'm completely wrong.

Thanks for the info. That's what I found online as well and today I went from Pennzoil Platinum Euro to Motul X-cess and the noise seems to be less but I haven't gone on a long drive yet. The video is up now.

I would think if it was a valve noise it would be rhythmic all the time at some interval and nor more random as yours seems to be. With the car cold, band around on the exhaust system (mufflers and cats) you might have something loose inside one of them that occasionally rattles or vibrates.

Yes I have an idea. My engine also had a ticking noise which also intermittent and just sounded metal ticky over the somewhat noisy engine. When I took it to the Porsche dealership even the lead mechanic looked concerned, but when we put the car on the hoist he inserted a screwdriver at the belt tensioner and noise went away.
Replaced the belt tensioner and all is good. Still a noisy engine but the ticking went away. 09 C2S with 32km

When I bought my 997.1 it had Pentosin High Performance oil in it. On colder San Fran mornings I could hear some valve noise if the music was off. Since switching to Motul 8100 Xcess 5w40 ive never heard it again.

That is a metallic ticking noise that does not seem to correspond to engine rpm. The fact that it happened most after a Canyon run sounds like it may just be the metallic tinking noise that happens from rapid change in temperature of metallic parts in the car particularly the exhaust system.
You can test this by turning the engine off when you get done with your canyon run and does the tinking noise still persist or does it go away
