A good thread on pistonheads in a similar vein: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1496598&i=0
3 pages of owner posts with nothing but good things to say about their 997.1.

^^^^^agreed. if it's a worrisome concern now then I'd just avoid the potential.
if I were going to get a 997.1 I'd be looking to do it in the 30s and not the 40s. Nothing wrong with a 997.1 As has been said, know the risks. Starting out at a lower price point should allow you to hold some back for emergencies..
of course if you're spending 44k I dont see why you wouldnt just grab something like this instead

Looks nice. I dont think you can go wrong either way as long as you get a good PPI.
If it were me I would get a lower mile 997.1 vs higher mile 997.2. I know others will argue with me but I'd be less concerned about maintenance costs and more concerned about the depreciation hit when you hit 100k miles on the 997.2.
On a side note, I was over at my indy today and the conversation of bore scoring came up. The lead mechanic stated in his 15yrs as a p-car mechanic, including 8 at one of the busiest dealers in the Bay Area, he'd never seen a single case of bore scoring. Lots of IMS failures on old Boxters, a handful of cracked cylinders in 997s, a bunch of worn chain guides in 996s...but never a single case of bore scoring.

The Bruce: I agree, I would rather a 20k/30k mile 997.1...I think. But this one smelled new...the last 2008 997.1 with 32k miles I test drove did not. For some reason it is a big deal to me. My 2005 Audi S4 still smells new...to me.

I am test driving a 28k mile 997.2 today. In Cherry Hill. Seems reasonabley priced, maybe slightly high. I posted a link to it in the 997 deals thread. If i like the car, the PPI is monday.

On my e36 I’ve had for 2 years I’ve spent double the purchase price on maintenance and repairs, tires etc. such is the life of owning an old car so something like over $20k on a car that was $40k brand new. Is it financially worth it? No. Is there anything else today that drives like it? No. It’s light and endearing and has 4 doors and there’s nothing else quite like it.
Thankfully my 997.2 has been a solid semi-daily but I’m not looking forward to the Porsche tax when it comes to repairs like the clutch. Alignment costs almost double that of other cars. If you want the car you just have to bite the bullet and accept the costs and not worry about opportunity costs. Find a clean one that doesn’t have obvious issues, hope for the best and enjoy.

I have owned two pre DFI Porsches: An '06 Carrera base and an '07 Bosxter S. Both were flawless cars. No engine issues. Although you cannot rule out IMS bearing failure, the key, in my opinion, is to drive them frequently and to change oil every 5-7K miles. A while back I bumped into the owner of my '06 Carrera and it was still going strong at 75K miles. Anyway my .02 cents worth. Until Saturday I had a DFI Boxster S and I just traded it for the last of the 997.2's, a 2012 911 GTS with a manual. I've read a posting that Porsche only sold around 300 manual GTS's so if that is accurate, then I have a real keeper.

Going to see a 116K mile 997.1 (08) right now. If I like what I see in terms of rust free and general, overall visible condition, I plan to take in to an indy Porsche specialist for a PPI. Indy is well regarded on these forums (EPE in Natick, MA) and told me they charge by the hour and will handle the PPI in stages where they give it the basic inspection and then report back with advice if a deeper dive is recommended.
Before I get to that stage, does anyone have an opinion about a 10 year old M97 with almost 12K a year on the clock?
