Default Tire wear and replacement suggestions

Hello all,

i hope everyone had a great holiday.

I have a 2010 Carrera with the stock 19” Michelins
and as I was looking at the wear from the morning crest run I noticed the inside of the fronts were wearing out faster than the outside. Is this normal? It’s not a daily driver, just an early weekend morning blast up Angeles Crest highway.
It seems like the fronts wear faster than the rears.

I can can feel the front end slide a bit but no tire noise.
Im up to the wear bars now and wanted suggestions on tires.
Since this is my first p car I’d ask you peeps.

Again in my driving consists of SoCal canyon drives and I’m hoping to get this on a track to see what it’s capable of.

Thanks in advance
mike

you might need an alignment. maybe you have too much negative camber up front.

Should I go to the dealer for that or can a regular tire shop handle it?

Typically the insides wear faster than the outside. This is because the tires are set like that so when you corner hard, the tire has more contact mid corner.
No way to know for sure if it is over the typical amount until you check it on an alignment machine compared to factory specs.
I think there are some threads here talking about the ideal caster / camber.
Check your tire pressure. Maybe you are running a bit low also.

Mike, you say your front tires wear faster than the rears. That's not normal. Most 997 owner's go through two or three sets of rear tires for every front set.

something's wrong. Mike

I wouldnt waste time with tire shops, i would go to a dealer and get it done right the first time. I will tell you that they may not be able to align it with worn tires, you may take it and let them look at it now, but wear out the set and get a new set then get it aligned.
Michelins are going to wear faster than any, I put good wearing tires on my car. Try bridgestone S04 or hankook v12 etc

You got good advice here. Rears where much faster if you are driving spiritedly, still about twice as fast as front if just daily driving. Something is wrong if front are wearing fast. Most Porsche dealers can give you quick alignment numbers in the drop off area. The inside of the rear wear faster because of camber. On Boxsters for example it is so bad some folks setup the camber to 0.5 degrees instead of 1.5. I did this on my last Boxster because I used it mostly highway to work. I have a tool I built where I can measure the camber myself.

We run the Hankooks on my wife's car, which is her DD, so the the treadwear and wet weather performance are more important than ultimate grip. I run Nitto Invos on my almost 500 HP RUF 997 and they have better corner carving grip than the Hankooks, but also wear quicker (had them on my wife's before we switched to the Hankooks). She gets 18-20k miles out of a set of rears I also run the Nittos on my supercharged 928. They're an excellent value.

By the way what are proper pressures for canyon carving?
ive been told 29 front and 31 rear, I so new I don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like. Should I start with the pressure labeled on the tire and go from there? They seem to heat up pretty quickly. If I start at 29 front they peak at 35ish.
Rear goes to 40

thanks
mike

That sounds really low. Check the tire label in the car.
My fronts cold are around 31-32 and my rears are at 39-40 psi

The manual says inflation for 19" summer and snow tires on a 997.2 C4 or C4S are:

Partially loaded (F/R): 34/37 psi
Fully loaded (F/R): 37/44

I think the pressure plate shows the fully loaded pressures, but I run the Partially loaded pressures. Make sure to select which setting you are using in the OBC.

I second double checking your cold pressures, there are good shops in LA that can handle the alignment, but you don't mention the age of the tire or tread depth in the rear or front, you may be riding on older tires if the car is new to you.

So tired of Angeles crest drivers, it is simply awful on weekends, tow trucks pulling cars out all up and down that road.

Currently having this debate with myself.

Are the PS4S's really worth $700 more? (Note: CAD pricing)

Will I regret the Kumhos?

I think some folks have had issues with Kumho quality and premature wear or failure (slipped belts, cupping, etc). Try a search for some experiences to double check my memory.
