Default 997.1 IMS question - can early M/97 bearings can be replaced w/o splitting case

all,

just purchased my 2005 997.1 "S" last month - love the car and had a quick question. being a 996 owner for several years the IMS issue was always a concern.
with my new to me 997S i have no fears of the IMS, however, was wondering whether the information regarding early M/97 engines i received is correct

was told none of the M/97 engines can have IMS bearing replaced WITHOUT splitting case - isee on a few posts this isn't necessarily correct

can anyone tell me the vin# range of the early M/97 engines which have earlier style/replaceable IMS bearing> - my 997 "S" engine serial# is: M97/0168503820

thx in advance.

Using the VIN range is not reliable. Some 2005 S cars had the smaller bearing. The only way to tell for sure is check the nut or the IMS flange. If the center nut of the IMS flange is a 13mm hex then it's the old style bearing and can be replaced without splitting the case. If it's a 22mm nut then it's the new larger updated bearing which is generally considered reliable and does not need to be replaced. By the way I love Atlas Gray. Congrats on the new 997.1.
