Best story so far! Mine is pretty boring. Test drove an e36 M3 around 2001 at Peter Pan BMW when they would just toss you the keys for a solo test drive. Had a new e46 330i at the time and I never forgot the M3. By the time I was ready to get a real sports car the 2008 M3 was nothing like the e36 M3. Test drove a 2008 Cayman and felt that go cart like experience again. Switched briefly into a 2011 Cayenne, then 2006 Carrera coupe, to a 2009 Carrera cab and now completely addicted with a 2010 GT3.

That is a good story. Yours is not boring, it is a really nice progression. RJ

I'm half German, and always loved German engineering... especially cars. A Porsche 911 has been a dream of mine since I was a kid playing with Matchbox cars. After college, my friend (another Rennlister, cbracerx) got into Porsches, and he had a 911 and a 944 Turbo. 27 years ago, we went up to Lime Rock Park in CT, for a Drivers Education event with the PCA. He let me take both his cars out on the track, and I never had so much fun in my life. I knew that when I could afford it, I would get a 911. The kids are through college now, and so 6 months ago, I started my search. It took a few months to find the right one, but I'm so happy I did. I've done a Fun Run and an Autocross with the PCA (Golden Gate Region), and I look forward to checking out Laguna Seca, Sonoma and Thunderhill.

In about 2005, though it may have been fall 2004, I went to grab lunch on a weekday at the local mall. As I was driving away, I saw a brand new black 997. Looking back now, it could have been a Launch Edition car but I never knew that. To me, at that time, Porsches were out of reach and just a dream. I was barely out of law school at my first job and I spent most of my spare time tinkering with my Saabs, including building my rally car.

Fast forward 10 years, and progressing through MINI Cooper S JCW and (supercharged) Honda S2000 ownership, and I had finally put myself into position to buy a nice car. I had a big amount of want for a C63 (still do!), but after a night out with my mechanic buddy who had borrowed a C63 from his work for the night (not a customer car mind, but one that they were going to sell) and comparing head to head with another friend’s second generation CTS-V, I knew what was what. I could have gotten a newish C63, or a slightly older 997. For the money, I figured the 997 would be more special. And I already owned a C55 which I reckoned was basically 2/3 a C63 at 1/3 the price, so off I went 997 hunting. Weissach out of Vancouver helped, and I missed out on one, a really nice C2S with lots of TechArt parts, and passed on several others. Finally got a call one day and soon after was on a one way flight to Vancouver. That was September 2014, have enjoyed every minute of 997 ownership.

Should also mention, I thought long and hard about getting a 996 Turbo too. Unlike others, I really don’t mind the fried egg headlights, but I couldn’t bring myself to love the interior. Also figured turbocharged car ownership would lead me down another black hole of modifying so I ditched that idea and dove into 997s. Briefly thought about E92 M3s too, but wanted a more thoroughbred car.

The same car as yours, minus the S. Arctic Silver C2 Cabriolet, with Lobster fork wheels. 6 speed manual.

Mine was supposed to be a gateway to Ferrari ownership. Hence, the red over beige color combo. Funny thing happened on the way to F-car ownership - the wife and I fell in love with the 997.2S!

"So, what lead you to buy your first Porsche"?

Growing up and infected with the boxer engine hum in my head. It's all my dad drove from the late 50's into the 80's.

1970's and two posters on my wall. Porsche Turbo and the iconic Farah Fawcett. One was attainable, and the other wasn't. Probably spent as much time looking at the Porsche....

First car was a 1974 Triumph TR6 and loved sports cars, but never thought I'd own a Porsche. Roll tape forward and now I'm very lucky. First Porsche was a 2006 C2S Cab. Loved it. That left for a 2011 TTS. Added a Cayenne GTS (Daily Driver), and a GT4. Pretty much set until I can get my hands on a GT3RS.

Great ride! Put a pic in your avatar. Good story.

I'm half German and wonder if that is part of the attraction. DD is a BMW.

Went looking for a convertible in 2003 and I coworker suggested I look at Boxster's didn't think i it would be in my budget but saw an ad went and test drove bought it. I then started to look at Cayenne's and once I had paid off the my Boxster bought a 2006 Cayenne my DD have put 100000 miles on her and people still are amazed at how good she still looks 11 years and 135000 miles later. Then the real itch began and I was looking at Caymans but my wife said you real want a convertible and you can not have 3 Porsches so turned to looking at 911 Turbo Cab as i was not going to buy entry level this time. Sold my beloved Boxster early this year found a 2009 Turbo Cabriolet drove 325 miles twice once to look 2nd time to buy, and bought about 6 weeks after my first trip down to see it. Fastest car I have ever drove.

Had always loved the 356, there was something very hypnotic about its looks. Bought my first Porsche book in 1982 and like a number of other dreams, this one seemed to slip by the wayside. Fast forward to 2013 and I saw a full page ad in the New York Times celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 911. Two days later I saw an article on Yahoo News "10 used cars you should probably own", one of the cars was a 993. I looked at the cars available on Yahoo Auto and found a 91 964 convertible in Guards Red. I sent an email to my wife entitled, "if I can't get a Harley" what about one of these (one day)?" Her exact reply was "You know if you really do want it we can figure a way. I just would not prefer you get a convertible. Red is nice!!"

That was all I needed to hear, I checked with my insurance company and was surprised that the cost to insure it was the same as my current DD. I did some research through the fall and winter and by June 2014 I purchased a 05 997 coupe in Guards Red / Black.

Nice car. In 1982 did you buy your first Porsche or was the 997 your first? You say you bought your first Porsche "book" in 1982. RJ
