Does shift from 2nd to 3rd gear normally feel spring loaded
Hi there! Just wondering if anyone had any knowledge about how the shift from 2nd to 3rd should feel in a 2008 911 S 6-spd manual. I am looking at one and on the test drive, only a shift from 2nd to 3rd does it feel like it has spring to release from 2nd. I don't feel this in the 996 model so I am curious if it's normal and ok. It doesn't pop out by itself like I have read on another thread about fluids, etc. It just seems to Pop when pulled from 2nd to 3rd like a spring, not on any other gear change. Thank you for your advice!
(P.S. Brand new to this site and don't know much about this at all so please don't beat me up, my current is a PDK)

I've not noticed the shift from 2nd to 3rd in either of my 997s feeling "spring loaded" or that that one change feels different than any other. That being said, both my cars have SSK in them that were installed before we bought them so not sure what the stock shifter feels like.
If it feels like that, I might be concerned that it won't be long before the synchro/retainer ring that holds it in 2nd may start not holding it in 2nd any longer and then you'd be looking at rebuilding the transmission or sourcing a replacement.

All the shifts between gears (except for reverse) all behave the same and that is consistant with my 2000 Boxster S and 1009 C2S. The gears (actually the shifting mechanisms) are spring loaded to move your shifter to a single spot in neutral. All springyness and lever position etc is all controlled or provided inside the transmission, not the shifter. When you pull out of any gear, you meet resistance, then release, and then you feel the spring pull you to that neutral position. It behaves the same coming from every gear.
Now getting into a gear can differ, particularly 1st which can jam if your fluid is old and notchy into 2nd because it just is. But that is another set of matters.

Maybe your cables need adjustment. The cables and/or linkages may have stretched or expanded to the point that they need to be adjusted; or perhaps weren’t properly installed from the get go.
Porsche makes a tool specifically to aid in the proper installation of the cable ends. Maybe the cables were previously replaced without using the tool.

Normal. There is a spring loading that positions the shifter in line with the 3-4 gate. Coming out of 1st or 2nd the shifter wants to pop to the right in neutral, in line with the 3-4 gate. Likewise, coming out of 6th it wants to pop left, again in line with 3-4. With a crowded pattern it actually helps let the driver find the correct gear by feel quickly.
