It's threads like this that that have me sticking with my manual transmissions instead of trying out the new tech, where I can do a clutch replacement at about 100,000 miles for $2.500. I am considering a used Macan Turbo but these PDK replacements out of warranty have kept me from pulling the trigger since that's the transmission in the Macan, and it's a heavier vehicle than a 911. Porsche won't use the PDK in the Cayennes, even up through the 2019 new platform launch models, which contributes to my hesitancy about how robust the PDK really is.

Glad you're back on the road though - or soon will be, and am sure you are too.

I would imagine when these malfunction they throw codes which would emulate an electrical issue, but are a manifestation of something mechanical or a more serious problem. $10k suck, but is definitely doable and perhaps worth it to self insure. $18k or $20k+ is when you reach the point the car no longer because worth the repair without a warranty coverage unless perhaps it is a GTS or C4S with a higher value.

Specifically the cost of the replacement transmission, and the labor cost (with total hours)?

Labor rates/hr can vary dramatically from dealer to dealer (and region to region)...

did they mention why the PDK failed? Or is it again closed box and cannot do diagnostics on it?

The dealership really helped me out, the trans came to $9,000 and the labor $1,100

They billed it at 10hrs, another dealership billed it at 15?!

The error was P1733 and deals with 3rd shift rod sensor which fails at 60C and won't go into gear until it cools down. They won't open the box, they can't get the sensor and the only option was completed replacement.

As a side note, $110/hr is a very good rate from a dealer.

Here in the SF Bay Area, my local Porsche dealer charges $225/hr.

Heck my local Dodge dealer (I also have a Durango) charges $175/hr...

I've always been a MT guy but really liked the PDKs I tried.

In the end I went for MT due to the same concerns with possible failures, just wasn't willing to roll the dice...

I was also in the same dilemma. All my life I used MT and looked for "control steering wheel" and went at the end on the Tiptronic s.
While being aware of the disadvantages and advantages.
Overall, I am very pleased, especially after learning to drive with TIP. However, the next Porsche - Manual

Take delivery this afternoon (hopefully) after they run it, get it up to temp and confirm it is in good order.

Meanwhile, I have been thoroughly enjoying the Cayenne loaner.
