The character of an older car?
I have always bought new cars every two years, partially because I would get bored and partially because I enjoy everything being perfect. This was before I bought my first porsche. My 997.2 gts is now closing on 7 years old. It is holding up great, but small things related to normal use ware and tear start to become more evident. This is my daily driver, but is very well cared for. I am starting to find my eye wandering to a new one, just to erase the ware and tear issues. Obviously I would have to change to 991.1 at minimum. Any thoughts?

That’s what I did. I went from a 997.1 to a 991.1 last year. No regrets.

I bought my GTS to daily drive, and I've loved it these past (nearly) two years. However, I like the car so much that I'm going to be taking it off daily driver duty so I can make the car a bit more focused and cut down on any daily driver wear and tear as well as give it attention on those small things that can be brought 100% back to being perfect.
As far as 991.1 goes.. not for me. Just nothing exciting about the ones I tried. I will be getting a 991.2 GTS though to add to my 997 GTS, not replace.
I'll get something else altogether as a daily since there are times when the 911 isn't the most appropriate daily (like when I want to take my dog to the vet.)

From the OP's thread title I thought he was realizing and admiring the 'character' of a well driven car. Patina creates character; wear & tear should be fixed.

I was trying to get to that. I am developing a taste for the patina of a used car, but also like the new stuff too. I would have to leave my family before adding a second porsche to my garage. We can always dream.

I think that without a doubt, the 991.1 is a better, quicker and more advanced car. However, since I am looking for a weekend car, the 997.2 just suits what I am looking for better. It also helps that the 997.2 is $10-15k or so cheaper than a 991.1. If I was looking for a car as a daily driver though, like you are, then I don't think you can go wrong with a 991.1.

The 991 is much more GT car than the 997, which is more sports car. Look at a Macan Turbo or GTS if you need a slightly larger, fun to drive, daily.

I have been driving a lot of 991s that my wife brings home, granted all but one of have been turbo or turbo Ss. I really don't see how one can call the 991 a GT car or say it "much more" GT than a 997. The 991 is quicker, handles better, turn in is razor sharp and it sets up well from apex to exit with a nice neutral little slide when exceeding limits mid corner. Comfort, convenience and technology is a plus IMO.
A Maserati GT or my DB11 is "much more" of a GT than a 997, but the 991, especially the .2, is actually is a better handling and every bit of rewarding to drive sports car than the 997.
The absolutely crazy part is how much further advanced the new 911s are over the 997s in acceleration and handling in just a few years. The 991.2s are so good and so much better, the only reasons to remain in a 997 is cost of entry.

Let me also preface the above by saying we are all not so fortunate to experience your bad **** Ruf on a daily basis and anything may feel GT compared to your car.

The comparison and conclusions in this recent video are spot-on

Both models have their strengths.

So is the 997 "much more GT" when compared to a 996, 993, 965, 964, 930, 911 of which I have owned several versions of all and the 997 is definitely more refined.
The reality is, the 991 is a very capable sports car and runs circles around the 997 in performance categories so does that make it much more GT or much more sports car?
I have seen this topics in some form or fashion every since I began driving and racing 911s back in the 80s every time a new model comes out. Those who are stuck in or stay in the prior models swear they are the better, more true 911s . . . that is until they later break down and pick up the later model at which time it becomes the best and the better and truer model than the even newer 911s that came out subsequent to their upgrade.
The reality is, one seeking to make this determination needs to step away from a keyboard and drive some cars as opinions will vary widely on these comparisons.

Mine 997.1 base is closing in on 13 yrs old, I've had it closing in on 9 yrs, driven daily. I put a new motor in it (scoring), the roof needs a respray now, front clip and one rear quarter I'm trying to get a couple more years out of. I've driven .2's and 991's, they're great but I prefer the less-refined attitude of mine. This was my first Porsche and most likely my last. I don't track, I couldn't care less about impressing anyone. It all comes down to personal preference. Nobody needs a Porsche. Buy and drive what makes you feel good.

If you can afford either drive both. Choose the one you fall in love with.
