2006 997.1 has a faulty mass airflow sensor. Part $765, with tax and install about $940 by dealer. Does that sound about right? What causes the sensor to fail?

Sometimes this fault code is triggered by a MAF sensor that is just a bit dirty, which can be remedied by removing the sensor and cleaning it with MAF spray cleaner from your local parts store. Just spritz off the sensor, give it a good washdown, but don't touch the insides of the sensor with anything, even a Q-tip. Let it dry, reinstall, reset the fault code.
You may need a special Torx bit to remove the sensor--manufacturers are getting tricky about making DIY hard to do.
If that doesn't correct the problem, a new genuine Porsche MAF sensor is available for several hundred dollars less that the dealer quote, or you may choose a Bosch replacement for even less.

The last two times Ive had a MAF code.....it was just dirty (wifes Jag and my Rover). Pull it, clean it with MAF cleaner, let dry and motor on. Cheap, easy fix. You might need to spray it down, let it sit and repeat as the gunk might be a little caked on. Check the connector going to it as well, make sure its making good contact.
Report back with findings....good luck!
