Read your owners manual. add oil by the instructions and watch the gauge. when you get near the top , add small amounts untill you 'trip' the high mark. then you know you still have room for more oil, but youre not over full, which is prohibited
Not all 3.8s do. I've got 2 997.1 3.8s and neither burns a lot of oil. 0.5-1.0 qt every 4,000-5,000 miles.

I will burn about 0.5qt after a track event but near zero (according to the oil measurement system) during a 3-4K oil change interval. Exclusively used Mobil 1 0W40 European Formula.

Uh-oh....not another oil thread (opology if it occurs)!

Dear Porsche A.G.:

Please give us our dip sticks back so we don't have to suffer through frequent and numerous threads dealing with the electronic dipstick gauge. I would even pay for a real dipstick as an option.

Please!!

Danke.

For sure Danke!!!!!!! I just can't wrap my head around a sensor telling me where my oil level is.

On the .2 9A1 motors the oil gets scavenged and pumped into an internal chamber (the term sump disturbs some people). Seems to me that the motor needs to be running and on a flat surface for a period of time to stabilize the oil level in the chamber to get a reading. I'm not sure how a dipstick would work in these motors.

That's exactly how the dipstick works on the air-cooled 911's.

Engine running and at operating temp, car on level ground and pull the dipstick. No chance of gauge failure.

Uh, no. the oil sits in the sump when the car is off.

That seems like an awful lot. My car burns about 1 qt / 1500 miles. Not crazy about it, but I did the study with Porsche and they even scoped my bores for free (also under warranty). Have you checked the AOS? From my understanding, if you have a vacuum when trying to remove the oil cap with the engine running, you have a failing AOS. Try that. But top to bottom on the indicator in 300 miles is really excessive. Also, are you sure the ground you are filling/checking on is very level? I always check mine on my driveway, which is very level. It has to be.

The 9A1 sump level is in flux during driving. Without adequate time to stabilize when on a level with the car still and the pumps operating there is a real opportunity for a misread on the dipstick. How many people idle their car for a minute before shutting down? You don't? Your dipstick reading could be wrong. It seems like Porsche tried to engineer a solution. File that on the category of foreseeable use and misuse. The 997.1 is different.

yes, while driving its all over the place. Thats why you check it with the car not running after letting it sit overnight.

So just to be clear, you're saying the oil lifts itself out of the oil pan and into the sump chamber while the car sits there over night on the 9A1 motor? What you're saying may be true for the Gen 1 cars where the oil is stored in the pan and that is where a dipstick could be, but I find some problems with the physics involved on the .2 cars. Maybe we're talking apples and oranges here?

I recall reading a post waaaay back thay said upon request Jake could install a dip stick on the Gen 1 cars. Is this right?

Exactly!

There is no way I would try to 'top' it off. If the sensor is bad you'll really have problems. Drain and start over. Or even take to dealer if you don't normally do your own service. Something is not right.

If you ever have to rebuild your motor Jake Ruby will install a dipstick, I'd send it to him if I had to.
