Default Power Steering Reservoir

I am getting ready to replace my PS reservoir, due to a whistle/ tea kettle sound.

To that end, how much fluid is required for JUST for the reservoir? I know the total system capacity is 2.14L.

Thanks!

I would guess about 3/4L.

I had taken the top off of mine to avoid spilling Pentosin everywhere when you split the res from the pump. (4 T30 screws...be careful with the rubber seal). It shows you a pretty well-defined line of where it should be when filled but I bought two cans of Pentosin to bleed the slave and fill the reservoir.

One should be enough for just the reservoir.

Thanks Dan! How did you remove and reinstall the power steering lines?

The two hard lines are both clutch-related. From memory, the aft is a 13mm, the fore an 11mm.

The quick connect return lines require some care to make sure the tool you use equally depresses the red ring on both sides completely. I ended up modifying my trim removal tool (the angled fork) to fit perfectly. You can buy them also but I found the length and the angle helpful when I had to reach up to the slave...not really a concern on the reservoir, though.

I used the vinyl cap from the usual spinner at Autozone ("Help" section and a zip tie to contain any fluid. Fit perfectly but you could also use a shop towel if you're going to drop the new res right in...mine was open for a while.

Dan, did you replace the o-ring at the bottom of the tank?

Thanks!

I am purchasing from Sunset Porsche for $780 shipped. I looked for a used one, but they aren't readily available.

LA dismantlers have one for $450, but won't budge on the price. I didn't want to take a risk for that price just in case the two red connectors were damaged.

Are you thinking about replacing yours? It takes 2-3 weeks to receive, as it ships from Germany.

Nice. I was wondering if they had to move the engine to do this. I had the whistle but hadn't heard it in awhile and I don't see leaks. I also have some accumulator issues since the clutch is hard to depress when starting the car. Does that mean the slave may be in need of repair?

Sonnen will typically get stuff from GER in 3-4 days, fyi.

If you go to the trouble of replacing the accumulator, most say to do the slave at the same time. Check the clutch reservoir in the frunk to see if the fluid is above the correct range. If it is, then you have a faulty check valve in your slave and can add that to the list and knock them out at the same time.

To replace the reservoir you don't need to move the engine. Pretty straightforward.

Airbox comes out.

Y-pipe comes out.

Remove are the lines from the side of the reservoir

Remove the top of the reservoir to siphon out the Pentosin. (yellow)

Remove the front two AC bolts (green) and loosen the third in the back (blue)

That gives you clearance to loosen the two front bolts holding down the reservoir (green)

The tricky one is the one is the bolts in the back that runs through the reservoir and pump bracket

Only thing holding it in now is the rubber seal between the pump and the reservoir...give it a little tug.
