IMO rod bearings = welding coolant fittings

TommyT gave some good figures related to options; cheap versus keeping it OEM.

One thing to to also consider is the repair cost as a percentage of the car's value. It's easier to recover $5k on a $50k car versus a $15k car.

Still I've had few issues with my M5. I can't say the same about the two 7 series I owned.

On the topic of 996TT expenses: spoiler failure being a $3k+ fix should be a thing of the past, IMHO. Flush it yourself w/ Stopleak and replace the microswitches until that doesn't work anymore, then go electric or have the cylinders rebuilt. Buying the full OEM replacement is clearly the wrong approach.

No one is claiming that these are cheap cars, but part of the reason many of us shell out the initial purchase price for the TT is that they ARE fundamentally solid, well-engineered cars. Let's save the fear mongering for the N/A 996 forum. ;P

Very true. Just pointing out that on both of these fabulous machines, running costs can be reasonable or stealership hi.

I'm happy to hear that the cars are solid cars with the high end repairs being fairly rare. I could handle a $10k repair if needed but I wouldn't be happy about it. If I get one, I plan to keep it pretty stock except for maybe an exhaust and a set of wheels an maybe springs to get the ride height where I want it.

I've had my 996TT for 2 years now. Still smiling. No mechanical problems what so ever.
