Default Anyone upgrade just speakers in the oem rear sub-woofer box?

Well, the thread title pretty much sums up my question.

Who has upgraded the speakers in the oem rear sub-woofer box? I'm looking for sub woofers that would be a somewhat a direct replacement that are rated for 4 or 2 ohms.

All the threads I found focused on upgrading the door/dash/rear speakers but nothing about the actual subwoofer ones.

Thanks

This gentleman used the 2 ohm nominal JBL GTO's:

I've replaced my Bose dash speakers with the JBL GTO 428's, and have been very happy with them. Planning to do the rest of the drivers eventually like he did.

Well then... I was pretty sure the sub box speakers were 5" just like the doors. But if they are putting GTO 528's in there with no trimming, then the rear sub speakers are 5.25"?

Also, do you have an upgraded head unit and amp?

Yep, it sounds like they're the same as what's in the doors, though I haven't personally verified.

Just to be clear, I have a 2002 (last year of non-MOST) w/ the Bose system.

I replaced my head unit with an OEM-style "Continental" brand radio:

I was able to retain the stock Bose amp and easily interface the HU to it using the harness that the same vendor sells:

I had Dynamat installed in the back and the shop told me that I have a non-OEM subwoofer. It's got a lot of bass, but I wonder if it's not a potential source for the drone I hear from 2200-2400RPM. It was huge when I tried out an aftermarket exhaust, and now that my ear is tuned to hear it, even stock exhaust has a low frequency resonance in that RPM range. Just something to ponder...

I don't think the doors and sub is the same. I bought 5.25" focal speakers and had to trim the door enclosure like everyone else. Based on what people are saying in the thread you posted the GTO 528 are direct replacement for the sub box. Wonder if sub is 5.25" because know doors are 5".

I have a double din and upgraded amp with stock speakers in dash and rear and well sub. They amp and HU really transformed how the stock bose speakers perform. Curious if switching to JLB in dash and rear will be a huge difference.

Is the box stock? Any other details on your setup?

I have done it - here is a link to several photos of my original installation many years ago. There are a few of the sub woofer upgrade. I have since upgraded to a double DIN Pioneer AVIX 5200 head unit and Morel Elate 2 way rear speakers, in lieu of the Hertz originally installed in the rear (they could not handle the power). IMO, this system ended up sounding phenomenal!

Hey John,

So you were actually able to fit 6" Morel subs just by trimming the lip on them? That is great news. Which Morels you go with?

Wanted to bring this old thread back and see if anyone else has upgraded the subwoofers only.

I will be installing a new double din radio and amp again, and curious if anyone has found a decent 5.25" woofer that work well with our OEM boxes.

Also in for info on this as my stock sub sucks and I don't really want an aftermarket box.

Another option to significantly improve the sound of the factory Bose subwoofer is to stuff it with a bag of Poly-Fil from a crafts store and put some sound deadener on the back of the it (the part that isn't carpeted). Takes less than an hour and it tightens up the sound quite a bit.

Maybe I'll try that. Thanks!
