The fix is a band of elastic whose job is to pull the outer skin into the groove. The elastic gets tired, but you can adjust it with a screw. to get to it put the top 1/2 way up, unstrap the velcro straps for the headliner and you should see the elastic. It's tricky to unscrew & re-screw the elastic adjuster, but go for it. I did on my Boxster, which has the same setup. It took some trial and error to get the correct tension, but I did it.

Yes. I have came across a post/ documentation not sure in rennlist or 6speed talking about the components of a 996 soft top
There is a sting/ extension part at the side wall of the soft top to hold it in the right track during the closure process. This issue may be due to loosening/ malfunctioning of this part which is not difficult to fix.

There is a tensioning cable that runs along the side of the top. It is connected at the rear by a ball joint or an eye and screw, and at the front by a rivet and spring. A common failure is the rivet fails causing the cable to go slack. When that happens the sides of the top do not pull down into the rails.
Put the top in service mode, between up and down, and check the cable at the rear mount. You can disconnect it by unsnapping it from the ball stud on the body or removing the screw through the eyelet, depending on which your have.
Put the top most of the way up and tug the disconnected end of the cable to see if it is connected at the front or broken somewhere in the middle.

Woo
so sophisticated
it seems that if the situation is not that bad, just use something to limit the degree of displacement of The rim of soft top during the folding process will serve

I have a hardtop, I sometimes use it in the winter principally to make the car quieter since I won't be putting the top down anyway. Would still want one even though I don't use it more than a month a year. Makes for a nice change.

Update:
I'm going to pull the trigger on a Cabriolet. Have a couple candidates. So I'm advertising my Speed Yellow 02 coupe... so far just Craigslist (flake city) but will get serious. I only have a one car garage (life in the big city) so can only have one 996 Turbo at a time inside. :-/
