Can anyone tell me what this is?
So I just received my 996 turbo from Oklahoma. I had 2 ppis done on the car since I wasn't able to fly out to see the car. Received a clean bill of health from both. I goto look under the car and I see this.
It's towards the rear bumper directly behind the exhaust. It's not leaking but it looks like a gasket because it feels like melted rubber. Anyone more knowledgeable than I can chime in it would be great. The car pulls like nothing I've ever experienced before. No cel. Has some mods done to it. It goes to my local dealership on Tuesday to have them give the car the once over to make sure everything really is 100%.
Thanks.

Coolant pipe coming out of the engine block and going to the water pump. The black rubber portion is #16 on the part cat.... The outside black rubber ring is a protection for the other part under which is an aluminium connector tube part#17.... Very easy to replace.... But the leak is further up. Often when someone accidentally spill oil while filling engine oil, the residual end up exactly in this location....... Clean and recheck later....

I'm willing to bet that your power steering reservoir is leaking. Either the reservoir itself or the hoses that connect to it at the lid. If people don't know how to remove the hoses properly, they often get damaged and the connection leaks. Pentosin will make it's way down in the exact area of the rubber seal which will swell due to coming in contact with it. If the rubber seal feels "spongy" there is your problem. Engine oil will not make the seal swell. Pentosin will...
I had this same exact issue when I bought my car years ago. Took me a while to chase it down as the leak was very small and not apparent to the naked eye. I finally found it by wedging some paper towels around the power steering reservoir and the respective hoses and seeing the oily stain on them over time.

The PPI did indicate that the power steering pump/resoivoir was leaking. I guess that's it then. I'll have it addressed on Tuesday. I was just concerned that it was going to be something else. I drove it today also very briefly and the steering doesn't groan or feel sluggish or anything. Maybe a slow gradual leak. Thanks again! I'll report back after the dealer lets me know what the situation is.

Dont forget to replace the small oring at tank to pump interface!oring can get damaged when they set pump to side if pump just pushed to the side during an engine drop.

with powdrhound and the rest above - replaced my pump this year because of a small leak. The hoses up top were damaged and the leak returned to this exact location. eke on bringing to the dealer...plenty of places in jersey to bring it to without being raped.

Oh absolutely there are plenty of places to go. I usually goto JA Autowerks in red bank. Great shop. But I don't have a ride back home so I need the loaner. They are getting pretty competitive. They will meet or beat any independent shop price for a repair. That coupled with the loaner make for a no brainer this time. Thanks for all the information guys!
