Default Mezger engine noise

So I've been doing some more research on the noise that is supposedly emitted from the intermediate shaft gears in our tt mezger motors. Seems like some have started experiencing this noise at very low mileage while others claim it was non existent until later on, I've heard this is caused by backlash in gears and others say it is gear to chain slop. Did anyone experience this noise when they purchased their 996 new back in the day? How many of you had this occur just out of the blue?

Also does anyone have a good breakdown of the mezger 3.6 engine assembly? Just trying to learn all that I can about this beast of a motor.

The only noise I hear is the scavenge pumps but without a stethoscope the main case pump can be heard and it's been this way for over 50 years. Don't know if I have ever heard any other noise coming from the motors as common.

i think it would be "fair" to refer to the timing chain rattle these cars exhibit as "normal" aka marbles in a can.

some are louder than others, and most all are quieted significantly by running a 5/40 or a 5/50 approved oil.

Everyone I have come across akes the noise! Never have I not heard the noise.
I remember reading someone on this board tore the engine down, replaced the IMS, the gears and bearings. Still got the noise.

Whenever someone asks about it I say "it's a race car engine". Most people have a puzzled look and say OK. My engineer gearhead buddy's want the details.

Not necessarily a pleasing sound, from a mechanical standpoint, but neither are some diesels, but they seem to run for a long time. Just sounds like loose rattling chains. those kind of sounds don't make me think of high performance in the least.

Default Below 2000 RPM Can of Marble Noise on Mezger TT

Bought a new 2002 TT Coupe Manual no noise. Traded it in for a Ferrari, after 16,000 KM.
On my 04 Cab TT no noise until she hit 66,000 KM ,,, now I am at 74,000 KM and living with it using 5-50 oil which reduces the noise quite a bit.
However, you will see noise level goes down significantly more, if you do not fill the oil more than 3/4 from the arrow top. Not the full top.
The noise comes on as you accelerate and goes away as soon as you take the foot off the gas pedal or go above the 2,000 RPM. On the tiptronic any way.

I read the service history for an x50 car I was looking to buy with 28k miles on the clock. Owner brought it in for service because of new noise and dealership wrote that it was normal. He subsequently sold the car. The car was in Great shape. I didn't hear it so can't comment, but every turbo I have heard is noisy. The 5w40 td oil quiets her down for 3k miles.

I have records on my car from first owner, and one of the things is engine noise. I don't know if it's a usual check but Porsche tech wrote: "no strange noises, engine sounds perfect".

I've never thought about it other than that chain type of sound. Now with the 3" Speedtech I can't hear squat

I can't understand the logic some use saying this car is this and that much money. Should the value of the car eliminate some type of noises? I'm pretty sure that you'll hear a big amount of strange noises in hyper cars too. These aren't normal cars with simple engines. My V10 M5 sounds like a diesel on idle, they all do.
