Default OEM 996/986 Throttle Body for $238.00 Possible?!

I have P0507 codes ( idle high etc ) and its not a vac leak, so the next obvious item is a faulty TB and since it was swapped out as a spare a few years back, I'm not gonna bother cleaning it, just gonna replace.

my question has to do with this pricing! $238.00 for a NEW(?) Bosch on Ebay?!

by chance has anyone ever bought this TB before? it's an eBay seller and they claim its a NEW Bosch ( which pelican lists for $1200.00+ Porsche OEM branded is $1300.00! ) so before i pull the trigger i just wondered if this pricing seems even feasible. i called them, they confirm it's a NEW OEM part.

the part number is correct ( its the same TB as in a 986 boxter ) part # 996-665-115-01

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-...5YIjFt&vxp=mtr

any help/advice is appreciated. TIA.

Same one I bought, and yes it's identical to the 986 of like years. No problems what so ever. I had a bad potentiometer in mine.

Thanks atrox.. That's helpful.
Is the potentiometer an internal component of the tb?

From what I understand the TB has two sensors located in it. I popped of the plastic cover on mine and thoroughly cleaned it with some maf cleaner. Inside it's similar to what you see with slot cars making a connection to the track (best example I could come up with) and it had quite a lot of dirt buildup in there.

the one I've got in there now came out of a gt2 so it was used when swapped awhile back. I'm gonna swap again w another but i think its time for a "new" one. at $238 its not worth messing around. for 1200?! it is well worth "messing around". when i swapped in my new plenum it was clean, so i dont think thats "it"..

but thx.

Right. There are copper tracks that an arm rides over. It's kinda like this (not exactly the same, it's from a BMW):

TPS switches on older cars also have something similar:

holy sh*t.. ..and i thought tb "cleaning" was for the butterfly or whatever its called.. lol. no way I'm opening that up.

all kidding aside..i cant see anyone opening up the tb. there's just a plug in connector..doesnt look like any "serviceable"
item I've ever seen.

It's easy it's, the black oval shaped plastic cover. A few clips and it's done.

really!? so how would one even test the potentiometer?

i think even if t's "easy" its beyond the scope of both myself AND my "help". its not like a voltage reg! or is it... (?) my pal is very good. but even he's gonna say f that.. just buy the TB lol

you up have to remove the tb to properly clean it, it's super easy. You will never be able to clean it well with it still on the car. I'm no expert or skilled mechanic, and this was an easy removal. You will save a ton of cash if you remove/install yourself. I'll give you a link hang on.

thats not a problem. its been in/out of the car many times. i wasn't gonna just spray cnc in there

but again, i know what residue looks like.. and didnt see any when last i had the sucker out of the car.. so I'm assuming its just "time". remember, i put in a used gt2 tb awhile back. i have ( limited ) access to a lotta spare parts sometimes

thx for the link/help.. btw. getting it in/out is a non issue.

It's really not that complicated. I've cleaned the tracks and arm on old throttle position switches, and those were much more difficult because they were sealed and required cutting through the epoxy to get at the innards. This one is just a few clips. In the end, you just need to make sure the metal arm contacts the metal track all the way through its movement arc and there is no dirt present. Problems arise when dirt gets between the arm and the track and causes a break in the connection. I've also seen old ones where the arm needed to be bent down so it made a stronger contact with the tracks. If you can bend/clean the contacts on the turn signal of the 996 headlight, you can do this.

dan.. what is "uncomplicated" for you would be ( although I'm guessing here..) confounding in its enormity for me!

but thanks for posting that schematic. even my tech would look at that sideways! again, thanks tho...

that said..? i DID manage the turn light contact "twist" myself! lol.. seriously though.. I'm gonna try this spare and r&r a new one if thats the cause of my issue. only time i ever WISHED it was just a boost leak ha. thx again.
