Default Hating the 6 speed gearshift feel

We replaced the shifter with a 997 unit but the shifting feel on the 996tt still feels terrible and sloppy (coming from a 944 and Mazdaspeed Miata). What else can I do to sort this out? It's the 2-3 shift that is the worst. I'm thinking about GT3 shifter base and cables to get it more precise but is there anything else? I just replaced the bushings on the cables of my Evo 6 shifter (at the transmission end) and that helped feel and precision but I haven't seen similar bushings for the 996. Thank you Rennlisters!

go with the 997/GT3 version, it's exactly what you want

New Option! - Looking for a race version of this part? We now have the GT3 version, it's identical, but plastic shift bushings are replaced with Billet Aluminum.

not sure about getting it down under, but it was the first thing I replaced on my 996

engine and trans mounts...the 2-3 shift issue is almost always the trans mount...varying opinions on stock vs semi-solid or solid, but can say there is never any balking/lack of feel by going with semi-solids, even WOT/full G out of corners

Did the Function-First solution combined with the 997 SSK and it made a night and day difference

Thanks guys.
I already have the 997 shifter but will check out the transmission mounts the next time I'm under the car. Has anyone done the GT3 cables with the metal bushings in the end?

Like Rob said, do the trans mount and motor mounts if they're all old, you'll feel that improvement right away then can determine what other changes really feel like.

I did stock 997 trans mount, 964rs mounts, 7gt3 shifter, cup cables, unweighted linkage and its a precise rifle bolt feel.

The 997.2 GT3 RS shifter, Cup shift cables, and new trans mounts.

I would stay away from the Numeric shifter, I have seen failures and I personally do not like the feel.

If you go with solid or semi solid trans mounts you will have transmission noise transmitted through the cabin.

Second that transmission mounts thing. When my 2003 Turbo's factory shifter broke the tech replaced it with a 997 shifter. Big big improvement. But my car's transmission (and engine) mounts are just fine.

I liked the shift feel change made by removing the masses from the shift cable bracket at the trans. You have a lot more feel for when the trans is in gear etc while shifting. It a free mod try that out and see if you like it.

^this
Can you be certain the Numeric is adjusted correctly?
I got rid of mine for this reason.

I used a OE shifter with the adjustment tool to lock in place, then swapped to the Numeric. I liked it, but after the gt3 wouldn't go back. I can easily check to see if my cables are properly adjusted once in a while. I'm also a little paranoid/**** on this subject after paying to rebuild transmission.

I've upgraded to the GT3RS shifter and I'm still not happy with my shifting. No 2nd to 3rd problem as stated by op though. I most likely need motor and trans mounts as I'm at 80k miles.
After reading this thread I have a question. When I installed the GT3RS shifter I used the green bridge to adjust the linkage. The 996 stock shifter had a white bridge. By using the green bridge on the GT3RS shifter am I adjusting the cables for a GT3RS car?
Now I'm worried about future trans problems.

No you adjusted the cables for the shifter you have. We have done this many time with no transmission issues.
