Which engine oil do you use?

In his previous threads he was using M1 0w-40, then went to motul 8100 5w-40 (or was it 50?) and it smoked a little so he went back to m1 5w-40 and I can't remember if he stayed there or went back to 0w-40. He said the bulk of his miles, especially the first 300k or so were on the m1 0w-40.

If you need another reason to run 0w40, here's one. Variocams don't operate properly on heavier oil, according to this Panorama article.

I live in an area that is on average very warm, and use what Kevin (UMW) recommends for these type temperatures...Mobil 1 5W50.

Porsche recognizes a number of oils suitable for these cars. Certainly there is 0W-40 but a number of 5w-40 oils and even one 5w-50 oil is recognized.

I have run 0w-40 and then switched to 5w-50 oil and have not noticed any downsides to this oil. I didn't expect to.

Just be aware that Porsche calls for 0w-40 oil if the car is used in cold climes, with the trigger temperature when 0w-40 should be used being -25C (-13F?). Frankly I'd err on the side of caution and switch to 0W-40 oil before -25C. My inclination would be to switch to 0w-40 if the car was going to spend any time with the temperatures below freezing.

Sorry, you guys are right. It actually doesn't say 0w40 in that article about the variocams. It says he was using an oil that was too heavy. It does say to use Porsche recommended oils.

i use 5/50 and since switching from 0/40 the car no longer exhibits an oil starved "screech" at startup it had w 0/40, in hi outdoor temps. it was as if the oil drained completely from all moving parts from the heat, and i wasn't going to crank the motor with some fuse removed to pre-lube prior to ignition, so 5/50 it is.

I think Rick was joking and now we've gone down the oil rabbit hole again.

I used to DD mine, and it was totally fine, though I have no problem driving something more practical and comfortable every day. These things are built to be everyday supercars, but do you actually want to? If your question is if you should buy another 996TT in rougher shape with a Tip to DD, I'd respond with a big NO. You already have one, so unless you just can't get enough I don't see the point of buying another one to put miles on. Post a budget and we can think of any number of cars that make more sense but might still be fun to drive. Hell if you can't get enough Porsche follow the other members' concepts and get a Cayman or something.

I DD mine to work, approximately 10 miles each way. I get about 14 mpg and have to fill up once a week. Like others have said, it's a part of my day I always look forward to. I leave early enough in the morning where I can open it up a little on the freeway. Coming home, it's more slow and go traffic.

Mobil 1 0W-40 seems to be the ticket for me. It does get cold here. Change it religiously every 5000 miles.

The 2004 Cayenne Turbo has 350,000+ miles on the ticker also.

I've been DD my turbo about 20miles to work each day so far this year, getting about 26MPG. Fantastic, no complaints besides the incredible amount of brake dust and stresses of avoiding rocks for construction season.
