People are dreaming if they think they are going to get a legit no stories 2004 TT cab for $35k. It's $10k below market for a reason if anyone cares to do a little research - and it ain't because it's a tippy.

I don't disagree with that.

My only point would be that a truly "no stories" car is not generally the norm, and hence, if that is what a car is, then it is at the higher-end of the market. In that case, $45k is completely appropriate.

If this is a car with the average number of questions marks over it, and with a Tip, and a cab, I would be surprised if it moved immediately at (say) $40k; i.e., if someone really wanted to move it fast, then asking $35k might be what it would take...

A dealer is not likely to offer a car for much less than they think that they can get for it. Generally, the only thing that drops prices at a dealer, are (1) some iffy history, or (2) some need to move the car fast (maybe a consignment, or something). I've seen more than a few of the latter cases...

Regarding the eBay connection, most things that sell there are cases of the same things. If you had a really nice car, and could afford to sit on it, then you would put a "market" reserve on it. The "not sold" listings are dominated by such cars...

This time of the year, that price doesn't add up. After Labor Day, that would still be a heckuva deal, but at least believable. Even with a tippy, that car would go at the dealers' auction for $40k this time of the year.
Manheim Market Report (dealers' auction valuation tool) shows average condition, 40k miles and no adjustment for X50 to have a wholesale value of $44k. The dealer could dump it at auction for $40k no doubt.

So why was car a bad car? I am very much a person who thinks more money doesn't mean better car. Same goes for car fax which is an almost useless tool. I didn't look it up but did it have a salvage title or major body damage? The reality is that nothing can replace trained eyes looking at the car.

I will let someone take a whiff of the interior for that price.
