Default Coil explosion

Cross posted this on 6speed.

So my car is in the shop for pinning of coolant lines, water pump etc.

After a test drive the car is parked idled for a little before shutting down, after 5 min smoke starts coming from the rear according to the mechanic. He found where the smoke was coming from and splashed some water on the coil.

After removing the coil this is what was seen.

It looks like internal explosion of some sort, with 2 exits.

I replaced the plugs and coils about 2K miles ago and purchased them from ECS. All coils were removed, and I contacted ECS. They apologized and stated they would take them back, and I am getting OEM coils.

I had never heard of such and thing, and we are both scratching our heads what caused it, short, bad coil?

Anyway, I wanted to remove them all just in case and go with a different set.

Part number can be seen in picture. I previously had Beru and now went with Bosch, I think the OEM's are Bosch as well?

Anyone experienced this before?

I have seen it before. Looks like a short. It might have been some wire harness or connector damage that caused it. That is usually the cause. Not the coil itself unless some how the coil was damaged.

OEM coils are Beru.

I'm no pro, but I have never seen or heard that before. Carlo_Carrera is correct, Beru is OEM.

I have never seen that happen but one way to find a bad coil is to feel for the hot one.

Good tip.

What do you do if they are all hot!

The bad one is usually much hotter than the rest. I always replace mine ahead of schedule but have helped others replace just one to save money.

Chicken or the egg theory in play..

I see white staining on the other coil, I wonder if there was any coolant or water that got inside the connector? Or if the connector wiring made ground. I hope that you didn't knock out one of the coil driver inside your ECU..

FYI, There has been an industry wide Re-design of the coil packs.. I have received the latest Beru coils. They are larger, thicker and more robust(robust=more mass)>>heavier vs previous designs. Infact, they provide you with longer mounting fasteners!! I'll post a picture..

Kevin that is a possibility since the lines were pinned and obviously coolant spilled. My only argument would be that the lines were pinned and car was ran with no issues before having other issues addressed, and while still at the shop this happened significantly later, but who knows. Out of safety however I had coils replaced.

Ordered this set. Don't think it needs longer bolts.

You could of ordered the new updated design Beru's for $227.28 then minus your 10% discount = $204.55

You want the new design that requires longer bolts.

The new thicker ones don't fit on all of the plugs. I think #5? Has a pipe in the way you have to use the thinner coil, one other has a bolt head clearance issue.
