Ruf Conversion done !
#16
I know how exciting this could be. When I had my Turbo R conversion, it felt like I was driving the car home with a bigger engine. It didn't just feel like the boost was increased.
If you have any acceleration numbers for the R Turbo that would be fun. There's not much acceleration data available on these cars. Here's my numbers from an AP-22 accelerometer with 91 octane and an easy launch. A person from R&T magazine told me they reached 60 in 3.3 seconds and 100 in 8 seconds. I recall Adam posting a 0-100 of 7.1 seconds for the 550 R Turbo.

Jack,
Thanks for the encouragement
I am talking to Asgar about it and have in mind a late winter conversion - just in time for spring.
I may have to change the description on the "Private Label" Root Beer.

Was there a reason you chose the 550 hp conversion over the 520? Did you start with an X50? I'm trying to justify (???) another $6k for an additional 30 hp.

I think the fact that the 550hp conversion includes a clutch change (sachs) made it worth it. The clutch is beefed up, and although the stated hp is 550hp, I think this is conservative.
All in all, I figured $6000 was worth the additional power, additional security of a stronger clutch, while at the same time eliminating any afterthoughts that I should have gone "higher" !

Is the clutch more stiff? The reason I ask is a preference not to have a heavier clutch for driving in traffic.

I believe the Ruf 550 clutch upgrade utilizes a single mass lightweight flywheel. If so, it is an additional performance upgrade. The car will rev quicker and accelerate faster to 60, 100, etc. with this part installed. IMHO, if you are already looking at a Ruf conversion, the Ruf LW clutch combined with the HP/torque increase would be well worth the 6k.

the clutch certainly doesn't feel more stiff...the engagement point is a little more precise but not too abrupt. It does take a little getting used too compared to stock, but after a few "practice rides" it is no problem at all....
hmmmm, time for another "practice ride"
