Prices on the 996tt are starting to get real close to the 997tt.
997 Turbo prices also are on the upswing... Last summer I looked at several perfect, lower mile (~20-30K miles) 997.1 Turbos (six speed, coupe) for at or under $70K and mid-mile cars (40K-60K miles) for $62-65K. Try to find one at that price now that isn't in some way shagged.

But I do agree, low mileage 996 turbo's for over $70k largely eliminate one of the most endearing attributes of a 996 Turbo... Amazing bang for the buck, aka: Supercar performance at Civic pricing...

I also know from a fair amount of first-hand wrenching on these cars that 'low mileage' doesn't equal 'needs nothing'. Most of the mechanical things that will need attention on a 60K mile seventeen-year-old 996 Turbo will also need attention on a 15K mile 996 Turbo, sometimes even more so.

At $70K+, 996 Turbo's IMHO move from BUY to at best HOLD, and possibly SELL unless they are a very special car that you are buying for collector value rather than an amazing ownership experience.

And low miles and/or X50 alone do not (again, IMHO), make for a very special car.

But sell and replace with what? Some bulky low-po 991?

In terms of the 996 Turbo being a car that is "amazing bang for the buck", the further it moves away from that the better.

I have been looking for a 996 Turbo for several months now. I figured an X50 car would be a better buy as long as the price wasn't at a huge premium. It seems low production numbers tend to make collector vehicles worth more. I am talking to a local person that has an X50 & factory aero package car. It has 35K miles on it. The car is in great shape and is all stock. He wants $63K for it. I think that is a little high. I thought it would be reasonable at $54K-$56k. Or is he priced where it should be with those options and mileage?

That is true assuming you already own a 996 Turbo and want it to appreciate. Not so good for someone on the other side of the coin trying to buy one. lol

I already own a 996 Turbo and don't ever plan on selling it, so there is no "wanting my car to appreciate" involved with my stated position.

I'm an advocate for the 996 Turbo and 996 Turbo owners, not for 996 Turbo buyers.

Actually for a rare car like that - I think that 63K is reasonable. I think her could get that or more if he listed it on Bring A Trailer auctions. unless it has accident damage or is a hideous color.

Of course, you are, you own one. haha Just kidding.

I am all for them appreciating over time as well. Not just because I plan to own one myself. When cars increase or keep their value it helps the cars be taken care of and preserved. It also keeps a strong supply of parts and aftermarket support for them. An all-around win for the car and the owners.

It is an accident-free, two owner car. The only options are X50, aero kit, supple leather seats, and floor mats. Silver over black. Attractive car for sure.

That's certainly a possible outcome, and it's the basis of my stated opinion.
