The pitch sounds to high.. Pull your oil filter and inspect for metal.. It will be packed with metal if you pinched a rod bearing.

Rod bearing noise is the few times I've heard it much deeper in sound. The parts involved are heavy, stiff/rigid and drenched in oil, which tends to mask the higher frequencies.

I can offer a few WAGs as to what it might be but regardless of what I offer the engine will have to be torn down and positively ID the source of the noise.

Before you wrench on the engine, are you sure the noise is coming from inside the engine?

'course, if you are planning on doing the rods anyhow, what difference does it make?

Thx.... the car is going to The Tim next week anyway for rods and stuff but the irony of all this is I wasn't going to drive it until then and got the summer E85 yesterday (84% measured) and had fixed a minor boost leak... extra power and bam silly boy beat on her like a Moroccan mule.

Will update later

Consensus seems to be IMS failure as per some old threads here and elsewhere

turbos don't have the IMS in the 996 N/A sense.

Its just a plain bearing at the end of the layshaft. I doubt this is your issue.

could be a water pump.

Cant the gears move on our ims shafts and cause noise, I believe that's why people upgrade to GT3 ims.

Now told it could be anything from a faulty water pump which sounds the same when it fails.... valve/lifters which can sound the same..... rods.... IMS.... yada yada yada

will update once it is ripped apart... getting it towed next week
