Default Warmed engine rattle sound, not internal

Hi All,
I've been enjoying my first few weeks win my new 996tt. I've been taking it easy getting use to the car and its handling. I do have a question about an engine noise that I noticed when I first purchased the car. I took two videos, the first video is right after a cold start up where everything sounds correct. The second video is after the car has warmed up and an unknown sound can be heard. It sort of sounds like a bearing or the power steering pump. I'm not referring to any internal engine rattling. At least I don't think I am.

Would love any input from you guys that have had your car for a while

Video cold start

Video warmed engine with unusual rattling noise by the power steering pump

Thanks for any insights!
Matt

I edited the post and instead of putting in the youtube tags in the editor I just put in the links to the video and everything is working properly... Ah code.

My 01 TT sounds exactly the same. Once warmed up the engine compartment sounds the same. I cant seem to locate the rattle- Runs perfect though at 63k.

Hard to appreciate something off. Is it the deep sound, higher frequency, dah-dah-dah-dah?

How many miles are on the car? When was the oil changed? I would drop the oil and install a 5W40 or 5W50 oil. It's near summer now, most of us can run a 5W50..

The noise is "very" typical of this engine.

It sounds like mine from the thread above

I've been told by 3 people it is the lifters, 3 that it is normal (it is not in my case), 4 people say the IMS and one says it is the rods

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post I've read through this forum and have come to respect your knowledge base on these cars and engines

I bought the car last month from Scottsdale AZ, it has 54k miles on it. I bough from a very meticulous owner. I have a receipt showing the oil had been changed by a local shop at the same time he had the slave clutch and accumulator changed a month before I bought the car with owner supplied oil. The owner told me he used 5w50M1. I believe him because he sent an extra case of 5w50M1 with the car and he include all the receipts for all the M1 he had bought over the years.

So long story short pretty sure the oil is very fresh and is using 5W50M1, which is what I plan on continuing to use.

The sound is sort of like a power steering whine that isn't there when cold. My guess is that the power steering pump gets a little noisy when the power steering fluid gets warmed up.

Thanks,
Matt

i heard that whistle in the first vid that is VERY reminiscent of the infamous power steering reservoir whistle/whine/whatever as outlined in tsb 4897. they used to replace the whole unit for the bad valve inside that resonates and causes that "whistle" like a tea kettle at boil. it would go away instantly upon clutch engagement. But it only occurr(ed) at HOT temps never cold at startup ( at least mine never did ) and i did NOT hear even a hint of it in your 2nd vid.

but it didn't sound "healthy" either. listened again, and hate to be in opposition to kevin here who is the obvious undisputed "pro" here who gives freely of his time and expertise and surely knows all things porsche better than i!, but that sounded wholly atypical to me. in fact, unhealthy is again the only word i can think of. mine sure doesn't sound like that at 127,850 miles ( running 5/50 always fresh ).

i would ( as suggested ) start fresh with some 5/50 and see if it quiets down a bit.

Also check the water pump and connected pulleys for any rattles

When searching for engine noises as mentioned the power steering pump, water pump, electric airpump, and drive pulleys all are suspect.

However, some engines just have louder IMS/Chain rattle. Here is "my" car with 20K miles on the clock. At 40 seconds you can hear the turbochargers whine and then the rattle. I'm running Mobil 5W50 when this video was shot. Rotella T6 or Mobil TDT will quiet the noise down.

Side note: In 2006/2007 I designed and built one of the first 3.0" merge cross over exhaust systems with cats..

My car has a similar rattle on Mobil one 5w50. Funny how it wasn't there before my rebuild over 2 years ago, not in the slightest.
Love the turbos spooling sound.

jim, what was the reason for an engine rebuild?! thats fairly serious for a low mileage daily diver!

Oil leaks covered by factory extended warranty, to me it wasn't a major leak but they did it.
