Catalytic Converter Fails to Register
Hello,
I am just back from the smog check where they didn't even want to run the emission check because the ECU came back with "Catalytic Converter Does Not Register".
Any idea what could be faulty and how much it would cost to fix it?

Do you have stock cats or a tune?
Bad cats will throw a check engine light. If it's been coded out you cannot pass smog as they check all obdii readiness indicators against a database for the car. They need to be active and ready.

The previous owner put a Fabspeed exhaust.
No light on the dashboard.
Forgive my candid question, but if it's been coded out, can it be reversed?

Did he change cats?
The below is from my car. While trying to get all indicators to set. They did just took a while.
See the x? That means it's not set.
See the circle with line ? That means those are inactive
If yours shows inactive on cat or shows an x on cat that is the issue
If inactive you need to get stock tune on the car
If x then either cat is bad or not stock or O2 sensor is bad

You are in a rock and a hard spot..
Yes, you will need to recode your ECU. Any Porsche dealer can do that.. I can also.. BUT..
As soon as you return to stock with the O2 reporting, they most likely will pick the CAT inefficiency ERROR.. This means that you will need to install a working STOCK exhaust of a working aftermarket exhaust with CAT's that are large enough or efficient enough to set the readiness codes.

Thank you all for your input.
Looks like I may need an ECU reset and a stock exhaust.
Any advice on where I can get an ECU reset for a good price, and done by someone trustworthy? I'm in Pasadena, CA.

I might have missed it, but what tune was on the ECU currently? I should be able to help you get it reset back to stock if you don't mind shipping the ECU. The tunes that I use still maintain monitor readiness in most cases but desensitize the O2.

Most Porsche dealers will reset your ECU for typically one hour of labor.
In the mean time you can borrow 029ttx50 stock exhaust OR send your exhaust to Fabspeed to replace your CAT's..

call house! explain the situation and if they can reset the ecu stock as they have a pwiss2 ( wtf its called !) pcar diagnostic device ) and put on a stock exhaust! problem solved. or shlep up into butchers holler up here and borrow a stocker from me. ( and bring it back) lol.
let us know. the offer stands. no need to ship the ecu etc etc.

Update: I tried a stock exhaust (known to work fine) and it still fails to register.
I guess the next step is to flash the ECU. If you are in the Pasadena, CA area and can flash the ECU back to stock (or mild mod), please MP me. I'm new to all this, so please be excuse my many questions.

but if that were the case then take advantage of kevin/umw's heres spring priced special for a new tune which (IIRC?) also includes ( or could include?? ) an obd data logger so the tune could be flashed to stock remotely than once you pass, back to super tune status.
he's in here currently and *trying* to help you! why dont you reach out to those two fellows to see if they can help you. i see you tried a stock exhaust but should you need another? again! i have one willing to lend, if it'll help you.
