Page 134 of my "Owner's Manual 911 Turbo" is headed Exercise Extreme Caution when Working on your Vehicle, there is no mention of operation of the vehicle such as speed, AND climate to determine the condition of the oil! .
Page 137 of my "Owner's Manual 911 Turbo" is headed Engine Oil Level and Topping off engine oil, no mention of engine oil viscosity.
The rest is the same as mcbit mentions.
Clearly we have different manuals!

am sure I will be happy with the 5w50, data sheets look great
6x5L of 5w50 for the 911(cleared out the store)
4x5L of 5w40 for BMW
...thinking of picking up more, good local sale on now
Cheers,

Funny how you both switched oils, be very interested to see what you think of the Castrol Rob.
May the best oil win.....

I was going to switch, opened a thread earlier this year, I was basically talked out of using the Castrol from members on this site and therefore continue use M1 5W-50. Even though I change my oil once per year at about 4K miles, the data sheets did show some differences between the M1 5w-50 and the Castrol. I still have an opened mind so keep us posted.
Here's the thread

Originally planned on using this exact Castrol 5w50 back when I bought the car, but fell back onto T6 5w40 when I was having a hard time finding an oil analysis/data sheet for the Castrol...both are very readily available in my area (I still have a stock pile of T6 as well, lol)
I always prefer higher viscosity oils. Think it will be a good oil for me...change every 3k Miles/5k km's max, or 3months; cheapest maintenance there is.
Cheers,

i change my oil so often and inspect for bits and am ocd like most but not enough to believe that as long as the zddp levels are within similar range that the CAR is going to notice anything different. if anything i'm OVER changing it. kevinmac, being talked OUT of trying the edge is just plain weird. it is a fine premium oil.
you'll love the castrol edge, ..just as you would/do the M1 5.50. i follow robs change frequency ...so now i just feel like i have a manageable ocd level LOL

mcbit, not to beat this to dealth but you listed it yourself in the Viscosity screenshot. Read the last paragraph. The middle east counties have the highest ambient temps. The question comes down whether one wants to read past the 0W40 to the next line and use a thicker weight designed for HOT geographic areas. I know what the oil sample reports looks like with 0W40. In the same discussion we can say that Porsche recommends a 15,000 mile oil change interval.. BTW, having a 5W50 weight at a 12C winter temp cold engine start is a moot point. The Mobil 5W50 is a lighter weight oil.
With regards to Castrol Edge 5W50, it is my "opinion" based on the specs vs Mobil 5W50. Castrol Edge 5W50 is a lessor oil. I base this on the higher Viscosity Index number and the High Temperature High Sheer value reported by each manufacture (Mobil has higher reported values). Mobil 1 is also thinner at cold engine startup. The Castrol Edge is a GOOD oil (better than many OTHER oils), but based on the numbers to me it's in 2nd place.
