996 turbo hot climate motor oil

I read stuff like this a lot, but it just never works out for me that way. I admit the oil change is straightforward, but the whole process takes me at least an hour. Looking at all of the steps -
Warming up car/oil
Pulling up car on homemade ramps, and taking out said ramps.
Taking out tools
Draining crankcase
Draining oil tank
Draining both turbos
Changing filter
Sucking oil out of filter housing with extractor
Examining filter for metal
Reinstalling plugs and new gaskets for all four drain holes.
Torqueing all four plugs to spec
Filling 8+ quarts of oil, including one quart down the filter housing
Installing new gasket on filter housing
Torqueing filter cover to spec
Starting car and checking oil level
Moving dirty oil from pan to jugs
Cleaning up tools
Pulling off ramps and putting them away.
Cleaning up myself!
Dunno, I just never could all of that in under an hour....

Make sure to let drain for a while from each plug...the crankcase in particular weeps for a long time after the initial drain surge.
5w50 is my suggestion, Mobil, Castrol, etc...choose good name brand and consider an oil analysis after if you have any concern on your pick.
I might try Castrol Edge 5w50 next year (Rotella T6 5w40 currently)

Lets hope your right Rob. I am also curious about Castrol as 02996ttx50 said "when it is hot i run a 50/50 MIX of ( this fill ) castrol edge full synth in 5/40 X 5/50 and i've never had a smoother idle/sound at hot temps"

The higher the VI and higher HTHS values point to "more" heat resistant/stable oil.
An oil that has a lot of Boron, boost the wear additives. Zinc and Phosphorus levels are elevated.
Mixing the two weights 50/50 would equal a 5W47?? I don't know what that really gets you?? A oil that is similar to Mobil 5W50? Edge is a tad bit thicker in the 5W50 vs Mobil 5W50..

the mix of castrol edge is the best oil ( yes, mixed, i have a lot of time on my hands ) since i began changing oils in my turbo(s) 6 + years ago.
i only tried it at the recommendation of guys that race their cars regularly and i dont mean de guys either.

Last two oil changes were with Castrol Edge 5-50 because the M1 5-40 TDT and 5-50 are hard to get in my area. It's not scientific, but the engine sure is quieter. Especially in hot weather.
I don't run it hard for extended periods and change it every 4000 miles so I don't worry too much about the oil breaking down.
