Mobil 1 5W50 synthetic oil
I was looking at mobil1 5W50 synthetic oil for my 996 TT( previous owner was using Motul). When i look on amazon i see 3 listed: Mobil1 Full synthetic; Mobil1 Rally formula; and Mobil1 Peak Life but i couldn't tell what the difference is, if any.
What do you think?
I am picking up the 996 in Arizona and it will be due for oil service before getting back to Nova Scotia -will be driving 5000 miles or more and I will take oil and related parts with me in case they are not available when needed.
This forum was very helpful in my researching my purchase and becoming a first time Porsche owner and I'm sure will continue as I complete service/maintenance on it.
Thanks
Wayne

Mobil 1 Full Syn is the standard one most everyone is using in the Mobil 5W50 variety sector.
WOW, a 5000 mile ride home... have a great time!

I've never seen the Peak Life/Rally Formula in person. I honestly think if you ordered the Peak Life from Amazon, you'd get the normal 5w50 with the red labeling.
I think Rally Formula is what our 5w50 is called in Europe/ROW. Just a different label.

Personally, in the cup car and the C2, I've been running Agip iRide 10w60, iRide 20w50, or Motul 300V 15w50 (my favorite thus far).
Those are racecars though, so it will take a bit of searching to find something for the Turbo.

The Mobil 1 0W40 is a thin oil. The 5W50 is not. Infact it is thicker than Motul 300V weight for weight. The 212F viscocity with Mobil 5W50 is very good. The 5W40 also do well. Putting straight 15W50 in this engine is not recommended.

Not necessarily. The most damage done to a car as a result of un-lubricated surfaces is at startup. This is also when oil is cold and it is most viscous. This is NOT a good thing.
I do, though believe you are fine with 0W40, 5W40 and 5W50...

Thanks ALL for the information because this is a new brand of car to me
-Audi and BMW I'm more familiar with. Now i can make an informed decision.
Also I'll be flying in to Pheonix ,seeing the 996 for the first time and leaving for the west coast the next morning!
Sanyata I've been looking at the GT 2 wheels you are selling-Tempting

The 5W-50 on Amazon even though it advertises Rally formula its all the same. I order it and got the same label and packaging as what you would come to expect. The question was asked to M1 and the response was they only make one formula of 5w-50 and what you are seeing is an old packaging label. Amazon with free shipping is a little bit less overall than AV lubricants store.

MB_Fahrer - 15w-50 is not a recommended oil or Porsche approved for your 996tt 5w-50 or 0w-40, or 5w-40 is. Check the Porsche recommended oil list for brands and other weights. Keep in mind these oils carry the Porsche and Mercedes accreditation which equates to long-life oil. One other thing the Porsche recommended oils have a higher zinc content than other oils in their respective weight range.
