Default Installed GT3 Shifter - now a cable problem

Marked the cables before removing them from shifter - installed the gt3 shifter - put the green alignment tool on the shifter rod - put the cables in their proper place and the left blue cable was 3/8 further down. Towards the transmission.

Fired the car - shifter felt fine -
drove the car and it shifted ok.

Put the cable in the same position from where it was in the old shifter - drove the car and it shifted ok.

So I ask, what is the proper position for the blue cable?? I don't want to screw up my trans.

And, what does the blue cable do?

How do you find the shifter compared to the 996?
Is it that much shorter and does it feel it has less movement than the 996? Thanks

^^^^I went from a 997 shifter to the GT3...feels better. Most likely because the 997 shifter was 8 years old. The throw is about the same.

You have to realize that the cable stretch. I'd recommend using the factory supplied alignment tool. Make sure that it's clipped on correctly.

I had the same problem and I think the issue is when you use the gt3 alignment tool is is designed
for gt3 cables and I was having problems like you. So I used the stock white turbo tool and presto! It was perfect and I am smooth as silk. For whatever the correct reason is the tools are different and the part numbers are different on the white and green tool and I could not get the green one to work on my car, Mike

I went through the same thing. All the DIY's I read said you have to mark the position of the cables before you remove the old shifter. That's BS. Just pop on the green alignment tool and put the cables in place, don't worry about marking or anything. That's the whole point of the alignment tool, just make sure you put it on correctly. It can go on backwards but its pretty obvious if you do.

EDINsf - Here you go -$12.95 at Suncoast - Basically it hold the shifter in the neutral center position, and you just attach the cables without any measurement, The key here is you need to put the transmission in neutral, disconnect the cables, snap the tool in place, then just connect the cables, you're done!

Hey Ed, yeah thats what I have been telling everyone but nobody wants to listen! LOL
The tools have a different part number and are physically different. When I used the green GT3 tool my cable would not fit as there were no threads to allow it to engage, Glad it worked out.... Mike

I always just snapped off the old ones and reattached to the new shifter, kept the new plastic links for spares, no alignment tool, no nothing. Never had a problem.
