Default turbo test drive

Hi rennlisters,

I test drove an 01 turbo with 40k on the odo this morning and had some questions I was hoping you guys could answer.

1st car has been remapped and boost was upped to 1.2 bars. I noticed at about 1.1 or 1.2 there was a jolt in the acceleration of the car. Much more noticable than my 04 TT with the same boost. Is that normal ?

2nd I found braking was not as good as I expected, pedal required considerable force.

I opened the front bonnet and found some oil leaking near yellow resevoir on the driver side. I figured that was the brake resevoir and could explain the weak braking. In the engine hatch I also noticed oil on the Driver side
corner, but couldnt tell where it was coming from. What do you guys think
are possible culprits and potential cost to fix? How big of a head ache am I looking at?
Any advice would be most helpful, thx in advance

If I was interested enough to consider buying I would get a ppi done and find out the extent of issues as you could speculate forever.

Sounds like the slave/accumulator is failing. Not sure about cost to replace, but I'd replace both items together.

Im getting a PPI done as well, but wanted to see if you guys have had experiencce with these specific issues

Paul are you referring to the clutch slave/accumulator or the brake slave cylinder? I did the test recommended by fellow rennlisters where I pushed the clutch 25-30 times and then restarted the car etc. no problems and no heavy clutch

thx

The slave and accumulator, not the master cylinder.

Usually when the front reservoir is overflowing (steering not brakes), that's the cause.

That 1.2 boost is a little high for the K16 turbos, unless more than just a tune was done. The oil on the drivers side was prbably pentosin hydrualic fluid, as others stated thats what happenes when the slave check valve goes. As others have said replace both the accumulator and slave. This is something that happens on these cars a lot.
It should not take much to stop the TT so yes I would suspect an issue? Porsche is known for having some of the best stopping vehicles.

If by the "driver side corner" of the engine hatch you mean the rear most corner any fluid leak sign there is likely to be from the spoiler hydraulic system.

You need to confirm this.

If the spoiler hydraulic system is leaking you need to brush up on the DIY articles on how to fix this yourself or how much this costs to have put right at a shop (dealer or indy) and adjust your offer price accordingly.

If the price is right with a good PPI and adequate allowances to properly perform necessary repairs it might be a good buy. I'd rather have a new clutch accumulator and slave with a two year warranty than a thirteen year old system that is an unknown. It doesn't have to be perfect but should be priced correctly.

My question is what was wrong with your '04 TT that you wanted to buy a 2001 Turbo? You may want to rethink this possible purchase as it could lead from what you have noted to a lot of future repairs and costs. Unless you truly love this car, my suggestion would be to continue your search and find a great year and model that has less potential headaches.
Good luck.

thanks guys
I sold the 04 tt and have regretted it since. Since then I'm looking for something else and if the price is right Id like to buy another turbo. Id like to do more DIY work and noticed the 01 and 02's have dropped to a very affordable purchase price. I figured this would be a good entry point and I could get alot of car for the money. Thanks for help

You'll miss the Cab!

Nothing like a scenic relaxing drive in a Porsche with the top down. Even a bit better with the Turbo.

the peak of the curve for any flashed turbo is somewhat of a jolt.. but i would've expected it well before 1.1 or 1.2? not sure what that felt like, but anytime we see 1.2, there's a lotta stuff goin on lol
