I've driven several, but not on a track. I came close to buying a tip TT cab a few years ago but it felt like I was missing something in the experience I was looking for. I drive an automatic car all day every day, and I was looking for more involvement and connection in my toy car.

Doesn't mean I'm right by any means - just my opinion based on what I'm most interested in. A big part of the joy of this car for me is the active participation and working the gears.

that was my reason for trying to find a manual first...for the enjoyment of driving a manual.

That is good by me.

If you get the chance try one at the track, it is really where the Tip comes into its own.

I could see the benefit on the track, especially for a ham-fisted fool like me. No way I can shift faster or smoother than the computer. I'm almost never on a track, though, so for the occasional blast around town with the top down, shifting myself makes me feel like a legitimate boy racer.

I really enjoy mine at the track. I have other cars that I can shift such as my NSX but the tt is a far better track tool. For driving around town and in traffic you can't beat the tt tip but on drives in the mountains I prefer the NSX with the 6 spd manual. My tt tip with a UMW flash is a freakin rocket and I am quite happy it is a tip, it has a real point and shoot personality. But if you want more involvement with the car, and I understand that, then get a manual.

Good luck,

Tytus

I am always surprised that so many people recommend the tiptronic transmission.

After driving one for the first time I walked away shaking my head in disbelief.

How could Porsche have let this car leave the factory like this?

I thought it ruined an othetwise great driving experience.

If you get the tip, dont ever drive a manual!

Even though I prefer and have manual! One good thing about a tip is, it is hard to get type 2 over revs if you track the car!

Did you drive it on a racetrack?

Wow this is going up and down like the stock market.

Bottom line.. IF the tips bring less money, how much?

Give me a break. I can heel-toe downshift in my sleep. Manual dexterity has nothing to do with it. It is about efficiency and speed.

Hurley Haywood owed a Turbo Tip and drove at the track often. What does that tell you?

Tips are about $1000 more expensive in most places in the world. In the USA a Tip seems to be about $500 to $1000 cheaper.

Haywood ran in the GT class for the Grand Am Rolex series and since the car was GT3 cup car, they are only standard. Maybe his private car. Be he said, he used the trip for safety reason leaving both hands on the wheel, and he was a proponent of leaving the trip shift by itself. Not sure that's such a great endorsement.
