Default Tiptronic in a TT?

I have been searching for a nice 03-05 TT Cab. I came across a with an automatic which I never considered, but the car looks nice and seems to be priced well below the 6 spd cars. Any thought on driving the Tiptronic, the reliability and the price verses a manual?
Thanks

it's both possible and understandable that the tip might be lower priced than 6spd's. the first time i drove a 996 turbo, it was a tip. shortly thereafter i got a 6mt for reasons that become obvious after driving them both. although they ARE both porsche turbo's

but if you stray from manual transmission,.. make it a pdk.

When I was looking for a Turbo, I actually wanted a Tip. My wife has a Tip Boxster and it's fun to drive. I had a 6 speed C2 for 7 years and wanted a change. Anyway the Turbo I bought was a 6speed in my least favorite color and without sports seats. So now after 2 years with my car, I'm glad I went with the 6 speed as I think it's a lot more fun and engaging. I can live with Black. It's gorgeous when just washed, I might even go it again. I do still wish I had sports seats.

If I ever bought another Turbo, I don't think I'd consider a Tip.

Actually they are pretty fast, and the tip can handle lots of power.

I did the GT2 conversion to my clutch and love it 95% of the time. 5% 0f the time I am in stop & slow (no go) freeway traffic and pondering the merits of a tip.

Thanks. I was hoping someone would say thay there are really solid, or something positive because the price of this car is low. The last sports car I owned that had an automatic was really really tuff to sell.

The Tip the TT uses is the same box as the "automatic" in the SL650 which of course has over 600 hp and tons of torque. It's just a 4 wheel drive version. I have Tip on mine and wouldn't go any other way. I did change the button shifting to paddles though. I also have a 991S with PDK also and it is even better.

Depends on use. For a daily driver in traffic - tip. For a weekend fun maker definitely manual. Much much more engaging. If having to choose between manual and PDK I would go with PDK....propably. Now that I know that there will be no more manual gear box turbos in production, a manual 2009 997tt (the last year with metzger -engine) would be my choise....

I had a tip and it was great. Did I miss the visceral experience of clutch and gear changes? Sure. In traffic in Atlanta - I loved it. On the track it was plenty fast. Enough for other TT guys to ask "what I did to it"...which was nothing more than exhaust and suspension.

Summary:
They cost less in the U.S. (resell will be lower - keep that in mind)
They are much easier to drive in heavy traffic.
They can handle power upgrades very well.
They weigh a bit more.
They are just as good - its the perception that hurts them.

If you are young, don't forget about all your friends giving you a hard time buying an automatic Porsche.

I bought my 04 X50 Tip last fall and really enjoy it. I drive in traffic a lot and run it in manual most of the time. If I lived out in the country I would have bought a 6 speed so I guess it depends on where you will be driving it. I have Techart exhaust and a 1.1 bar tune so it is plenty fast.

I purposely went out and bought a Tip Turbo. I love it as a daily driver and at the track. I have driven manuals on the street and track for almost thirty years and I just can't stand using a clutch pedal anymore. Except for my manual 356 it will be automatics or PDKs for me from now on.

I wanted a manual but the pricing, condition and service history was something I could not pass up on my current car..at the end it was a good choice for me and it's not like I can't drive a manual car.

I looked for and bought a Tip because I sit in dd traffic every day. I love a clutch for play, but I've found that at the track, I spend less time working, and more time just having fun. Push a button, get a gear.
This has been beat to death by the purists. It's a no win discussion. Yes, it's not a manual, and I'm totally happy, no regrets. Unfortunately the forum and community see the tip as a compromise. Good luck soon finding a clutch pedal. Your kids won't know what that extra pedal is for very soon!
