Default Water Pump

The water pump went out today. Fortunately, I was only 1 block from the house. Unfortunately, my CPO expired 6 weeks ago.

Two questions... Is it a DIY or does the engine need to be dropped? I can clearly see it with the air box removed and it's slinging coolant everywhere and emitting a definite squealing.

If the engine needs to be dropped, is there anything else I should do while it's out?

Thanks

I had my indi do my WP; it's a bit different on the Turbo than the NA 996 . the main crossmember that runs across the rear has very little clearance to be able to remove the WP. My indi indicated that the engine would have to be lowered just enough to allow the WP R&R. Im sure you can DIY with proper ramps and jack set up. then you also have to flush and refill the coolant and purge the residual air.

IIRC, the Turbo WP gasket I rec'd from Suncoast was a thin metal, unlike the video. IMO, I don't think you need all that RTV on the gasket as the video shows.

If you find a DIY please post it so all can share

If you don't find one and venture in there solo, please create a DIY! Thanks

Well I have company all weekend, I will be traveling all next week, and we are headed to the Bayhouse next weekend.

Taking the easy way out and sending it to the indie on Monday. I'll have the coolant lines pinned while they have it.

Unfortuneatley the above utube example is for the naturally aspirated version, and not the turbo. So don't think that helps!

A copy of the factory workshop manual for the 996 TT can be found on that other Porsche forum...

Cheers

It's worth a phone call to your dealer, especially if you have a good relationship with them. They might be able to get Porsche to goodwill the repair for you since it's so close to the CPO expiration. Worst they can say is no, then you're right back here anyway. Maybe you'll get lucky since the water pump failure is a known issue.

Tried that. I moved last year so the local dealer doesn't know me.

The good news is that I picked it up today when I got back in town.
At any rate, glad to have it back in the stable.

it is different. As mentioned above, there is a crossmember that cuts across the middle of the pump and forces you to partially drop the engine

Do know how far the engine had to be dropped ad how involved it was to do?

It is not a hard job at all. The engine needs to be lowered via the rear mounts a few inches to allow clearance in order to wiggle the wp out. Trust me, you will not get it out any other way. Also, it is a good time to replace the expansion tank and fuel filter since it is lowered and convenient to pop them in.
