Factory stereo going out
My factory stereo is messing up. The CD player seems to be dying. This is the base model stereo, not nav. Are there any threads about replacing this with an aftermarket head unit. I've searched, but not found any other than some about an aftermarket stereo messing with the alarm? Also, if you replace with a double din unit, where do you put the climate control unit?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Most of your questions depend on the exact year and configuration. There are replacement units out there. Here is one I have lusted after:

Removing the appropriate fuses works too but I'm loathe to mess with these unless absolutely necessary.
My 03's radio would not work right sometimes upon engine start. While I could turn the radio on and off and mess with its settings, no sound came out. Other times it comes on when I start the engine is comes up in FM mode and some semi-random station.
When I asked about this I was told it was due to what I mentioned above and there was a TSB on this. I never had the TSB applied since well, I was lazy/too busy or something.

Car is a 2003 TT here is a picture of the stereo. The CD player makes a clicking noise upon start up, sometimes. Occasionally I have to eject the disc to make it stop. Then reinsert and it will play ok. I've seen this in other CD players, motor going out? On a side note, the two large ***** are "sticky", plastic degradation, is this normal? Ferrari's suffered this problem early 00's.

for the double DIN route, other cars (with this option) have the climate control lower down, i.e. where you have the CD trays. I am sure someone with NAVI will be able to post a console picture.
Have you considered going for a Porsche becker replacement off ebay etc, you might even get the mutli changer version if you look around, for a reasonable price.
Could the issue with the ***** be related to cleaning and cleaning products? These are soft rubber compared to all of the hard plastics around them, and may react to some cleaners/silicone sprays.

The sticky *** problem is pretty common. You can get replacements from Stefan at SW Stereo, and from several other audio suppliers as well.

my cdr 23 was acting up. cd stopped working mid drive for no apparent reason. would not eject, then radio fm function began to go on/off with no response from controls. start car cycle on/off no help.
put car on ctek overnight and no more issues. these cars can exhibit some very peculiar symptoms when battery is lower than perhaps it should be. no other symptoms of a low battery were extant. strange.

Thanks! It's pretty easy to do, you can hide the DSP stuff behind and just uplug/move the climate control in the lower console. The single din cage needs to be modified by cutting the divider out and smoothing out the edges for the double din cage. Do this part at home since the stereo places will charge you for it!
