Default Whizzing noise from the engine

Last week when I pulled into the drive way I thought I heard a whizzing noise from the engine. It only lasted a few seconds. I heard it again when I stopped at the light today. It seem to go away when I rev up. I'm not sure if it is mechanical (pully) or electrical (pump). I checked the power steering fluid level and it was ok. Any commonly know issues? The car has only 30K miles and is well maintained.

Intake air leak after the air filter? Check all the hose clamps and connections after the air filter...

isseps,

My guess is the power steering pump whining maybe - there is a TSB on the replacement.

isseps,

They can be gotten on Renntech (but you need to be a contributing member) or just go to your local dealer and ask for a copy.

Also search around here and Renntech for TSB 4897.

If it goes away when you depress the clutch, it could be the TSB T2 mentioned.

Could be lots of things. Could be the secondary air injection pump cycling on and off. Does it make the same noise when you first start the car?

No noise when cold and depressing the clutch doesn't change anything.

Called around for price. I'm told the part number has been superseded by 997.314.920.31.
$925!!!!

Mine was doing this and it wasn't the reservoir as it didn't have the same symptoms as the TSB such as a high pitched noise or it going away with the clutch pressed in. I replaced my power steering pump last weekend and it appears to have fixed it, but now I am not sure that one of my idler pulleys might be a bit noisy.

Post back what you find. Also price your stuff from Sonnen, www.porscheoemparts.com, they are the cheapest. I bought the superceeded 996 pump for $330 instead of the newer 997 pump at $850 from memory.

Before you spend money on the power steering unit, double check that it is not the belt pulley. They are both in the same area and it's difficult to distinguish which is which until you remove the airbox.
