Need some advice... '02 turbo or '05 C2 S
Hello everyone,
I am looking to change cars (currently am driving an '01 C4)
I was origianlly thinking about a Lotus Exige S, but then I saw a couple of options.
An '02 turbo with low miles (16k) and an '05 Carrera S (about 44k on the clock).
1) Which one would you guys go for?
2) What would be a good price for each one?
3) What problems does each one inherently come with? IMS, etc...
thanks

There was another recent thread on comparing a 996 Turbo to a 997 C4S that may have some helpful comments too.
For me the look of the 997.1 cars is already dated and a bit boring. Between that and a Turbo (which I looked at as the prices were similar when I bought my car), it was a no brainer. If the other car were something like a Carrera GTS, then I might have more to think about.

Okay, here goes a monkey wrench into the gearbox (no pun intended), but I just came across an '08 Carrera, 44k on the clock, With a CPO till April of 2014... mint, except there is a whole in the headliner about the size of a dime under the passenger side sun visor, and the owner told me that he had a mouse in the car that chewed the wire to the third brake light. He had it repaired at the dealer and they cleared out the mouse's nest.
The owner states that there are now no problems with the car.
Do you guys think that there might be other hidden problems waiting to happen from what that mouse might have done? Should I walk away?

Engine wiring harness ruined (engine out repair); holes chewed in carpets (the fuzz removed probably for nesting material); rubber/plastic shrouding/ducting at radiator inlets chewed through; vapor return line from gas tank to engine chewed through; and of course a lot of trash though often not visible to the causal inspection.
In both cases the CEL was on and in the case of the car with the damaged engine wiring harness the engine was running poorly.
The car you are considering may not deserve rejection, but it will take more work on your part to build up enough confidence in the car.
Even though the car has a CPO the risk is if anything turns up later there could be some argument/dispute that the damage is 'new' and not something missed/overlooked from before.
Do you have the paperwork/repair paperwork that details what was done to address the rodent damage?
Of course, a PPI by someone who knows these cars inside/out is advised and furthermore the guy should be told to be on the lookout for signs of rodent damage.
Sincerely,
Macster.

An 08 is still a first gen 997, so I still say skip. Turbo is still the easy answer for me unless you're talking 2009+ cars, and even then it's still a hard cost/benefit analysis if it's in your price range (and then comes the issue of 2007 Turbo vs. 2009/2010 Carrera S).
