Default Bike Rack

Hi all,

I tried out my bike rack on the weekend. It seems to work OK although the rear glass is a bit flexy. I had intended to mount the other way around but don't want load on the sunroof. There is another mount option that uses three in-line pads which would fit ahead of the sunroof and put the load there.

Rack is a seasucker - www.seasucker.com

If I end up unhappy with this setup I may try the Willwood rear mount rack.

Cheers, Ben

Why don't you use the Porsche transporter?

Mine works awesome for bikes.

I take it you mean the roof racks, not the semi trailer? (now that would be cool but overkill for one bike). I didn't want to fit racks. Most of the time I take my wife's SUV when I want to ride.

Cheers, Ben

Yes, the Porsche roof racks.

It's extremely solid. I don't worry about the bike falling off and getting damaged or worse, damaging both the car and the bike. Or the rack scratching the car.

Racks can be tricky. Don't mess around. I bought mine used.

Really? I thought it would be a pain and that it attached under the roof lining.. How does it attach? What is left on the roof when the racks are off? I might change my system to the standard racks - then my skis can come out of the cab!

Cheers Ben

Edit: google found me a picture of the rack. Do you leave the base attachment pieces on between uses or thake the whole thing off and re-install the plugs? Believe it or not I web-researched these for ages before buying my seasuckers and it sounded a lot more difficult to attach them. Then today I google a slightly different term and BAM first hit is a detailed install pic! Grrrr....

They are extremely easy to take off.. Takes me 5 minutes to to install and 5 to tak off. I take the bases off too, if u notice the littld lids on the roof that is where they screw in

I wouldnt trust suction cups. Looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Looking at the add most of the weight is on the rear tire, not the cups. Too many times I have seen suction cups loose their grip!

Don't mess around with the suction cups. The Porsche rack doesn't rest on the paint. There are panels that flip up on the roof to attach the rack (screws directly to the roof). There is no better system around (BMW uses the same arrangement). I have lost bikes off a rack going 65 on the highway and regret putting others at risk with a poor rack install.

Thanks all, I am not really worried about the suction cups coming off (they are very secure plus have warning indicators if suction is dropping) but I'm not totally happy with resting on the rear glass or the bike needing to be backwards to keep the weight off the sunroof. The rear glass is not as sturdy as most cars from what I can tell.

I will be buying the Porsche rack soon and will be on the lookout for some bike racks to fit.

Cheers, Ben

Agreed - I have the porsche roof racks as well. They attach to preset mounting points located on all TT's. They attach is minutes and are really strong. The suction cup thing looks a little scary to me, especially if I was behind you on the highway.

Look at your roofline - there are four moveable flaps that flip up revealing the mounting point for the rack. The rack never touches the paint on your roof, so when you remove it, your roof looks unchanged.

OK - so I now have a Porsche Roof Transport System sitting at home. Now for accessories - do you lot use the Porsche bike carrier or another brand? What about ski carriers? The porsche units look to be abetter deal than Thule or Yakima branded equivalents.

Thanks, Ben
