Default CEL fix?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-St...#ht_500wt_1387

So far 2 days and no CEL! I put the above extension in at the aft O2 sensor locations and so far all good with no CEL. Hopefully the joy will last!

I'll bite.

What is modified with your car or exhaust that you need to use these? Should we assume you are getting 'cat codes' for that CEL?

Sorry for the lack of detail. I bought the car about a month ago and the second day after bringing it home I had the CEL come on and found codes associated with the cats the intakes and a few others. Since this is my first P-car and the exhaust is "custom with high flow cats", no after market warranty applied, so I was a bit frustrated. After some research and great work by two local shops…. all is clear.

The elbows were my idea since implementing them was similar to my previous car's setup and it's a pretty simple trick to fake out the aft O2 sensors.

I wonder if you're faking out yourself a bit too.

The DME will attempt to supply fuel to the engine (within limits) that result in the proper readings and behavior of the #2 O2 sensors.

While there is no CEL and error code associated with the #2 sensors, how sure are you the engine is being fueled optimally?

The Turbo engine is fitted with wideband #1 O2 sensors because fueling control is more precise with these. This is of course because the Turbo engine (any turbo-charged engine, really) is more sensitive to imprecise fueling.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Macster, thecel codes he is refering to is PO420 and O430, which indicates catalyist effeciency. When a bypass pipe or high flow cats replace the factory, the sensor is basically saying you have a bad cat. So it's not measuring O2 for fueling. This sensor measure catalyst which provides a means to meet emission standards!

or the car is running rich, due to other 'intake' issues...and the cats are overwhelmed, hence the codes.

(The pre-cat O2 is used for fuel, hence cat codes or cat function doesnt matter.)

As long as you know that AFR is right and the engine is running well, using a bung extender to fool the post cat is OK I guess.

Me, I invested in high quality cats.

I suspected the codes were P0420/P0430. While they do refer to the efficiency of the converters, they signal the converters are unable to store oxygen.

If these adapters bias the readings of the sensors the engine controller will adjust fueling to compensate.

Auto makers are tasked with providing clean running engines so the engine controller will attempt to tailor the air/fuel mixture, probably leaning the mixture out to provide more oxygen for the converters to store, in order to bring the #2 sensor readings back into their nominal readings.

So the mixture can affected even though it is the #2 sensors that are being 'fooled'.

Were I in the OP's shoes, after installing these sensor spoofers, I'd want to have the engine's AFR checked to ensure the engine was receiving optimal fueling.

Sincerely,

Macster.

The AFR was rich (found that out the second day after bringing the car home) and that has been fixed as well. The plan now is to really optimize the setup for the best performance.
