Cool Help with looking at 2002 Turbo in IL

Found a candidate in Orland Park, IL. and need someone to do a drive by and look at the car to see if its as good as it sounds. Ad is here - http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...al&CMP=usedInv - I am in CA and can't get there to look it over. Car is serviced at Rennology Motorsports - any experience with them? Owner also said that at 60k service some additional things done when "rear end was out" - what is that referring to? Does the engine come out to be serviced? PM me if you could look at car and I'll try to help set up. Thanks.

Can't help with the look, but I would want to know about the body kit that created the "GT2 Look". Is it OEM? Who installed? Who painted, etc.

60K mile maintenance might entail plug change, ask what was done. And ask for service history.

66Kmiles is a little high for asking price - also its a tip, which usually sell for less than 6speed.

Otherwise, the pics "look" good and as always caveat emptor - PPI.

Enjoy your search, if and/or when you find a 6Turbo, you'll love it

it also appears to have pccb's which is a curious thing not to be listed. i would think you'd have no trouble finding a local to SoCal car. i'm not sure i could buy long distance like that. GL though.

Ask the owner what he means. I can only guess, but it does read like the engine was out of the car. I note the car is a Tip so that rules out a clutch job.

Ask the owner where this work was done and then call and get some details. The owner should have the details though in his records file. Or if he is the kind to toss this stuff he should still remember or have taken the time to refresh his memory, though I can't believe such a major event would not be remembered. A seller has to know this kind of comment is going to raise questions and he should have the answers at hand.

Suspicious.

Furthermore, I'm a bit leery of cars that have had cosmetic changes.

Often times when I come across a post from some owner who has had the unfortunate luck to have some kind of accident with his car the owner seeks to use this opporunity to customize the car with non-stock (though they may be factory) body or body kit parts.

So, one always has to be doubly on his toes when he comes across a car that has its body's look changed. The change may have arisen because the owner just wanted a different look. But it might have been prompted by an accident.

Next, I note the car has had new tires and brakes.

Now tires don't bother me but at 66.5K miles new brakes were needed? And as another observant poster noted the brakes are PCCBs. This raises more warning flags.

There is nothing wrong with searching any distance, close by or far away, for a car to at least develop a good feel for the market. But buying long distance is something else. I can't believe you couldn't find a similar car and a more convenient car to consider, one you could inspect yourself and more easily arrange to have an expert examine the car for you.

Shop nationwide. But buy (if possible) locally.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Thanks all - passing on car as 1-owner only has his maintenance records and none from prior two owners; 2 - car was delivered in FL, been in TX and prior owner was in IL, don't like FL cars (sorry no offense meant-fear of water damage); 3- one reason for selling is "car is expensive to maintain"; 4 - black leather interior, too hot; need I say more? Hunt continues for 2002/03 turbo.

You can keep looking, but reason number 3 isn't going away. These cars ARE expensive to maintain.

Water damaged Porsches are rare and if one knows what he's doing easy to spot.

Florida cars are prized by many, dealers primarily, because the of the average very low miles and lack of snow/ice and of course the lack of exposure to salted/gritted roads.

But buy a car from an area with which you are comfortable.

Oh, expensive to maintain... There's good news and bad news.

Good news: Just got my Turbo back after an oil/filter service. Two 'problems'. Left rear tire has a screw in it and still have some tread life left. No way I wanted to replace both tires just yet. Even with 23K miles both rear tires have considerable tread left (at least a few K miles more of tread).

Worked out arrangement and had the tire patched, not at the Porsche dealer but at another dealer under the same corporation. In fact while the tire was off the car the tech spotted a nail and fixed that hole too. No charge. Good will.

Bad news: When I picked up the car after its oil/filter service the tech informed me the power steering valve was noisy. The noise when it appears is a high pitched squeal coming from the rear of the car. The valve body has a ball valve and the ball vibrates and makes the noise. No harm I'm told and a press of the clutch pedal stops the noise. Drove the car over 1K miles this weekend and never heard the noise.

Anyhow, tech says the reservior (tank) and valve come as an assembly but to save me some labor cost he can replace just the valve. The tank (alum. IIRC though I've not seen one) never goes bad.

Thought I'd put a tank/valve assembly on order and have on hand so the next time I brought the car in for service I'd have the valve replaced. About fell over when parts department quoted me around $1K for the tank/valve assembly.

That valve's going to squeal some before I replace it!

Sincerely,

Macster.

Doubt Fl cars are statistcally on the board as having problems with water damage. We don't get flooding here like the rest of the country! Heck California gets more flooding than we do! Tx would be the one state you should be worried about flooding! Besides the GT2 body kit that car is pretty basic. Hard to tell if it is PCCB's not lcose enough! Fla has a lot of Porsches, so you can be very selective down here.

Macster there is a TSB on the resevoir problem.

Any link to the TSB? Does it allow the fix to be done no cost or even part cost to the owner?

Sincerely,

Macster.
