Default Shock life expectancy

Hi all,

My 2003 stock 996tt is coming up to 48k miles.
At the 45k service the mechanic said the rear shocks were starting to "go".
I had not really felt anything but now that he said it perhaps the rear shock reaction has slowed (may also just be psychological!).
I guess 50k is more than fair for a set of shocks correct?

I also need new tires all around - think of going 235/40/18 & 315/30/18.

With all that said if I do need to replace the shocks - is it a good idea to replace all 4 and go to a slight better and more adjustable setup?

I don't want the ride height to go down much because it is a DD driver and I have to deal with speed bumps etc. Also if I go with the wider tires I don't want to have to deal with rubbing if the upgrade lower the car too much.

So with all that said I am asking for shock/suspension upgrade advice.

Thanks in advance,
Ciaran

PS : I am trying to regain my youth - just picked up an rx8 r3 .... now I am a ricer!

Sounds like an X73 OEM sports suspension might be perfect for you. Search this forum for reviews. If you want to go a bit lower, for the same $$ you can get into a set of pss10 coilovers that are universally loved. You will love the wider tire setup. Rubbing will depend more on the offset of your rims then the height of the suspension. I am a bit lower then GT2 spec with 315's out back, with no rubbing.

You will enjoy either upgrade.

Curious how he knows they are starting to go. Did they remove and put on a shock dyno?

Wondering the same thing myself... unless they are leaking, I suppose.

IMO, the stock shocks are finished from the start.

Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback. I will ask the mechanic about how
he got to his conclusion. X73 sounds promising....

The old oil on the shock trick. I'm amazed at how often mechanics still try to pull that one.

I'm not saying you don't need new shocks as I don't have a clue, but they aren't cheap. Unless you just need an excuse for the wife to do an upgrade (nothing wrong with that), then I would check it out further.

Afterall, you didn't notice anything amiss until the mechanic put the suggestion in your head.

This mechanic has been pretty straight with me in the past I feel, but I will post what I find out. Thanks again for all the feedback.
