Default Howto recognize a GT2/X50 Exhaust vs. Standard Turbo Exhaust

Hi all

I recently bought a X50/GT2 original Porsche exhaust (hopefully) on ebay. I wanted to ask if any of you know a visual difference between the two available exhausts i.e. X50/GT2 vs. standard Turbo exhaust. The problem I have is that I cannot find the part number on the exhaust. Any tips welcome

Thanks
Ronny

Actually there is a thread over on renntech.org about the serial numbers for each.

The question is why would you spend money on one?

I have an x50 turbo- ut upgraded to an aftermarket performance exhaust. I dont think there is a heck of a difference, if any, between x50 and standard exhaust beyond the exhaust tips (the x50 has a tip that looks likea double pipe)

My X50 has the standard oval pipe. Maybe they introduced that with the "S" model or in 2003? But functionally there is no difference AFAIK. The X50 was larger Turbos and intercoolers, later the S model offered Ceramic Brakes.

Those "dual" tips were an option on X50 and non-X50 cars. My non-X50 has the "dual" tips.

A common misconception with the X50 and GT2 intercoolers is that they are larger than the K16 versions.

That is not the case. The internal volume is the exact same. The difference is that the cooling fins extend past the cooler cores 3/16" creating more efficiency. Stock K16 I/C's have the cooling fins flush with the core.

Sound is the chief reason people seem to want the GT2/X50 over the standard. That, and the misconception that it will be loud enough to justify the switch. Although it's a little more raspy, I don't see it as being "worth" the swap for the $300-600 they seem to sell for.

And Kevin, once we get past the whole GT2 front end hokeypokey, I'm going to upgrade the intercoolers. That's one area I think is sorely overlooked in the "I want to mod my turbo" category.

According to the PET I reviewed, the GT2 had a different exhaust....

But the 996TT and 996TTX50 had the same part numbers.

ANY car could be ordered with X53 'quad tip' option...so the tips do not identify the car nor exhaust

Adam my PET is from 2003 only shows two options...

996 111 987 75 - GT2
996-111-027-75 - 996TT

What's the date on yours? My guess is Pete's info above is the most accurate... I need to download the current PET..
