Kevin,

My engine noise is no greater than all of the other Porsches out there (except for those that just had a fresh rebuild). However, it is my first Porsche and engine is louder than I am comfortable with. So a few more questions (I live in CA):

1. I just had my oil changed about 300 miles ago and the indy put in 0-40. I won't be able to get to another oil change until maybe end of January. So should I just live with the 0-40 for the time being or add ZDDPPlus to the oil for extra measure?

2. I live in CA where emissions testing is required. If ZDDP clogs/damages catalytic converters, do I really want to use an oil with higher ZDDP content?

3. I think you mentioned that I can change my oil filter any time. If I check/change my oil filter and see no metal particles in the pleats, would it be OK to just leave everything as is? (oil changed 300 miles ago)

CA appears to be a horrible state to own a Porsche with the catalytic converter/emissions requirements, 91 octane fuel, and ethanol in the fuel during certain seasons.

Are you sayin 5w50 is better and go to 5w40tdt if you have IMS noise?

Man i love these threads, thanks for your time Kevin, you are still the one who has my business.
When I switched from 0w40 to 5w50 M1, there was no difference in my IMS noise. When I switched to TDT 5w40, the noise was greatly reduced.

If you look at the specs on 0w40 and 5w50 the zinc and phosphorus are exactly the same. The TDT has 100 ppm more of each IIRC. After doing some research, it looks like any CJ-4 oil is limited to 1200 ppm of zinc, the older CI-4 oils have higher levels of ZDDP, but I'm not sure they are available anymore.

Paul everything is changing with the new emission guidelines.

Simi, we have had higher ZDDP levels for many years. Look at the 993TT, few CAT failures. They are getting clogged but mainly due to chronic oil issues. Change the oil when you can.. As far as the filter, ALL of us should be able to handle changing and replacing the factory oil filter.

Puma, the 5W50 is a great oil. The 5W40 TDT has additional metal conditioners.. I recommend the TDT for those that are having issues or think that they are.

Alex if you are already running 5W40 TDT >> don't switch. Since you are up in the Great white North, you don't see the high ambient temps as those in LA or Miami.

One of Keven's previous posts about the motor with the broken timing chain was mine. I had 42000 miles, k24 18g's and a popular(not keven's) tune.
One day running great and the next, CEL, Dealership, 26,000 for new motor. No warranty. Had 2 previous owners with 844 type 2 ignitions.
I had only put 6000 miles on it and changed oil every 3000 but previous intervals were uncertain.

Agreed.
My question is how to classify IMS noise levels to know if you are having early problems or not.
Oil analysis is not discriminatory nor definitive IMHO, at least with respect to IMS.

However, I do agree that PAG goes with 0W-40 simply since it is a one size fits all global oil fill.

How about Atlanta? The temperatures here are quite a wide range. 20's in the winter and 100 in the summer. I drive my car all the time. 7000 miles since July...does that change the recommendation between one or the other?

Also, what exactly does an IMS problem sound like? I think the engine sounds great, but I have no other Porsche to compare it to.

My car just past 70k miles BTW.

cannon, if you look at Puma's post >> he lives in Canada and runs the 5W40.. From memory 5W40 is good for -20. If you are tracking your car in 100 degrees, you might want to look at the 5W50 during your track season.

Beginner DE's and AutoX is all it will see hard. It is my DD. But so I understand 100%, 5w-50 in summer instead of the 5w-40 TDT?

yeah but i don't run it in that temperature in fact, it goes to sleep well before temperature reaches freezing point.

But we don't get those 100 deg here, at least, not very often.

Kevin, if owners are doing Used Oil Analysis (UOA's) with every oil change, is the filter "dissection" still necessary?

Kevin,

Have you ever added ZDDP Plus to Mobile 1 oil in 996 Turbo?

Has anybody? Just curious.
