Default SSK Questions???

Fist of all, my new-to-me 996TT is truly an amazing vehicle. I would liken it to a porsche 996TT with a shift box from a Barbie electric corvette.

A: Could someone define "notchy" to me? I drive a Mazda Speed6 right now as a point of reference.

B: What would the differences be between these two SSK products?

Just trying to sort our the differences...

I am sure that there are many Short shift threads written here on this Forum. With that said, I would pass on both of those pieces.

Our gearbox require a very precise adjusted cable system and adjustment. Aftermarked SSK aren't worth anything if you are rebuilding your gearbox and lifting $6500 to 8500 out of your wallet.

Guys if you guys are HEAVY handed and like the BANG the shifter>> Install the Factory Porsche 997GT3 shifter. It has minimal nylon with aluminum guts. Best shifter on the market. With that said, it does not have real short throws..

For most of my customers I recommend the standard 997 shifter, it is a upgrade over the 996 unit.

If you NEED to have a SSK, go with the factory Porsche 997 SSK..

I am strongly recommending that you install Genuine Porsche.

I fully agree just a small correction the 997 GT3 shifter is actually the same shifter used in the 997 Carrera etc.
part number is 997 424 010 00.

To the OP: Also cables play an important role, do a search.

Kevin,

So tell me how you really feel about the B&M! ahaha..

What's your opinion about maybe fitting the cup car shifter and cables. You think that it's worth it. The cables are pretty pricy but I think they make a difference compared to stock.

997GT3 shifter if you want a tad better/precise "feel"
997SSK if you want the PERFECT shorter throw and feel combo.

Assuming of course you don't own a "no modifications" car

Page, If you track your car, get the cables..

The 997SSK is not as smooth as the 997GT3 when you get impatient and heavy handed. These gearboxes need time for the forks to move the BorgWarner synchro and hubs over. If you are heavy handed and slam the gears into place the SSK put the internal at a disadvantage. The 997GT3 shifter is VERY good and has a way better feel over ANY of the 996 shifters >>factory OR aftermarket.

Look guys, I realize that this is a personal "taste" thing. But sometimes we need to error on the side of the mechanical components.. The 997SSK is a good piece of hardware, but be careful with banging the gears with it.

Put another way, if we looked at the best shifting 996 shifter and then installed the 997GT3 shifter for track and heavy street use >>> hands down the 997GT3 unit will win hands down. Then when you look at how well built it is > that's the bonus.. Just my .02 which won't get you much.

Agree with Kevin 100%. The key to the SSK is to make sure you are not a heavy handed shifter. Personally, I shift with the "heartbeat" method. When I have a student that tried to speed shift or gets heavy handed I have to explain (and show) how SLOWER shifting is actaully FASTER on track.

The stock GT3 shifter is by far the best feeling box I have ever used. The 997SSK feels phenomenal but you have to shift with the heatbeat method or you are going to get into trouble quickly.

Just be aware that if you fit cup cables you will get a lot more cabin noise.

I have the 997ssk and its very good.... it sometimes doesn't like being rushed into 3rd tho I find (as in, race speed shifting).... upgrade to the 997turbo mount for best effect !!
