berra, if you're not driving during winters? then it would be moot, but my current ( two day old! ) mix of 5 qts of catsrol 0/40 mixed w 3.5 of 5/50 isn't near as quiet as my summer blend which reverses the quantities of the thinner 0/40 oil with the thicker 5.5 qts of 5/50. the new blend, it's not LOUD, but it's by no means as quiet as my predominately 5/50 mix. i was concerned about the low oil condition at startup. winter temps ( 30+/- ) need 0/40! is my seat of the pants assessment. ( read: guess lol ) though i'd be fine with a full complement of 8.5 qts of 5/40.

Porsche A40 oil specification
Mobil 1 5W-50 is a fully synthetic engine oil approved by Porsche for cars requiring the Porsche A40 oil specification. Porsche engines requiring the A40 oil specification are factory-filled with Mobil 1 by Porsche"

Just read this thread, Kevin u gotta stop making statements! Turbos dont have a case issue! The noise is from the bad tolerances of the ims gears and/or timing chain gears due to crappy manufacturing!!! Period. Also seen a ****load of 997tts with bad oilpumps, once again manufacturing techniques!!

I haven't read the thread for awhile.. The engine cases were redesigned around the IMS and oil pump. That statement is the facts. The tired 964 casting was replaced with the newer Spanish made case. With the new casting it allowed Porsche to stiffen the bottom end and add the 2nd oil piston squirter for the 997TT/GT3.

Running 5W40 or 5W50 in this engine reduces the engine IMS noise. Many have had good results with Mobil 5W40 TDT or Shell 5W40 to quiet down the noise. A few are running Castrol Edge 5W40

Copied and pasted so I'll have a reference at the next change.

Going to stay with 0w40

My 2003 996 Turbo X50 just passed by 410,000 miles.

This oil change history, what we saw when we opened the engine and the oil I used for those miles is why I am sold on M1 0W-40.
