Default modifying stock exhaust

My mechanic suggested that, rather than buying a new Tubi or other aftermarket exhaust system- many of his customers have taken the cheaper route and had him do a special operation to remove 2 of the baffels on each side.
Does this change the pollution testing, or anything else negative for the car that I should consider before giving him the OK to do it? I'm after sound enhancement mainly. Mechanic gave me a quick demo of a 996tt that was there with the changed exhaust--sounded good. He says it won't drone on the highway, and adds a very small amount of power.

No it doesn't. Only if the cats are tampered with.

If you want to increase the exhaust tone drilling a hole in the muffler will give you a tone increase.

However, you will not see the gains in HP that a exhaust change will give you.

There is a guy in Houston who modifies stock cans, claims some minimal hp/tq increase. He's on 6 speed a lot.

see if you can get a test ride in the car your mechanic "demoed". Just test drove one. Sounded great from the outside, droned like crazy from the inside from 2k-3k. No substitute for a Europipe.

TT Surgeon,
The guy who does is it is Ken. He calls his exhaust the PBK (Porsche By Ken is the company name).
He takes a stock exhaust and modifies it for more power (minimal) and better sound. Then you send him your stock exhaust as part of the payment. www.porschebyken.com.

I bought a set of pedals from him and he was a straight shooter and a great contributor on 6-speed.

I guess you get what you pay for, but Ken does have an interesting idea.

There is an interesting thread on 6speed about drilling holes in the muffler through the tailpipe to improve the sound. Lots of people report liking the deeper exhaust sound; I have wanted to hear one but never have.

I have that mod done to my car, it sounds a bit better and you do gain maybe 5hp I believe, also you can control how loud the car gets by increasing the diameter of the hole, I started at .5" and ended up with a .75" diameter hole, all you need is a drill and an extension...

Any more resonance with windows up than stock? Are you generally happy with the change - would you do it again?

It is a bit louder, but I would not say that it drones, just start with a small hole. A used OEM exhaust is less than $200, if you hate it you can always go on ebay and get one...

I've got a complete stock exhaust plus quad tips you can have for $150 plus freight. It's been gather dust in my basement since I installed my Europipe-2 Quiet a few years ago.

Cheers,

I would have a reputable shop modify your exhaust. Are there any safety issues with drilling holes in the exhaust? Potential fire hazard ? Liability ?
Just playing the devils advocate here...
